The Gypsy Baron

Der Zigeunerbaron

Directing: Michaela RonzoniOliver IndraAnthony Jacobson

Synopsis

The Gypsy Baron is a movie about settled Romani People in Soroca, a little town in the Republic of Moldova right at the Ukrainian border. Small palaces with golden domes and curious façades with marbled halls and luxury cars in the driveway. But things aren’t always what they seem. The whole settlement equals a gigantomaniac, surreal and colourful Potemkin village. The film accompanies Artur Cherrari, the real democratically elected Baron of all Roma of the Republic of Moldova and thus the head of the Roma in Soroca, as well as Vale who might become Baron in the future, through the world of the Roma, illustrating their traditions, customs and everyday life. This involves issues such as the position of the Roma in Europe, their Soviet past, their social structure, their history and their future and their coping with everyday life.
