Czech TV Announces New Executive Director

On September 21, former head of the Czech commercial broadcaster TV Nova, Petr Dvořák, was elected the new executive director of the national television service of the Czech Republic. Among other reputable candidates, Dvořák has gained the majority of the council votes and proposed restructuring of the news section, launching a brand new channel for children with educational purposes as well as new forms of support for documentary film.

Other candidates in the final vote for the position of Czech Television executive director
:

Roman Bradáč - ředitel zpravodajství ČT
Hynek Chudárek - bývalý výkonný ředitel TV Óčko
Radomír Šimek - prezident Česko-německé obchodní a průmyslové komory
Jan Svoboda - bývalý marketingový ředitel Tv Prima

Since Dvořák’s residence in the Czech Television’s head office begins on October 1, there are still only few particular items in the plan he intends to execute once he is in charge. Besides the new educational channel for children, which might bear the title ČT3, Dvořák also hopes to disclose the financial structure of the institution and revise the quality of programme.  “In case I am elected, I will surely require information about the whole programme and each show ČT has already put on air or prepares for broadcasting, how they fulfill public service, what is their quality, what is their production costs, what is their air time. That should serve me to decide, which one of those will go on and which will not,” said the elected candidate in the interview for iHned.cz. The article stresses yet another important point: is the newscast and reporting of the public TV going to shift towards more sensationist style, peculiar to commercial broadcasting?

More importantly for the Czech documentary, it has leaked out that Dvořák is willing to address a well-known Czech producer, Fero Fenič, to participate on the new concept of the institution’s production. In an interview for aktualne.cz, Dvořák admited that: “Fero Fenič is an author, an experienced persona of documentary filmmaking. I guess this is how our cooperation may look like. It depends on the ideas he will bring up, on the conditions he is willing to collaborate with the Czech Television. He might be more than just an extern. Part of my plan is the introduction of a new system of production, the formation of production teams. If he would be interested, I believe there is a position for him among those teams.” In the past, Fenič’s company Febio produced crucial shows and documentaries that also aired on Czech Television, however, he failed as the head of an originating new TV station that never obtained license for broadcasting.
