IDFAcademy is the highpoint among educational events the Amsterdam-based IDFA organizes for emerging filmmakers throughout year . In search for new documentary talents, IDFA established two Dutch-only workshops: IDFA-Mediafonds Workshop, focusing on complex development and presentation of documentary projects, and Kids & Docs Workshop which cultivates a specific genre of children’s short documentary.
Besides IDFAcademy, international applicants may take part in a six-day-long inspiring workshop titled Summer School. The 2011 edition took place in July 4 – 9 with professionals and tutors assisting the participants with script development, editing phase, fine-tuning and even planning and crowd-funding. The finished films of the past years usually feature on International Documentary Festival in Amsterdam in November.
Compared to Summer School, IDFAcademy stresses the importance of meeting, networking and learning from others’ experiences. During the IDFA festival, IDFAcademy introduces variety of documentary industry professionals that are available for one-on-one meetings as well as for group sessions discussing the issues of development, distribution and pitching. The participants of the past sessions experienced master classes of such legends as Werner Herzog or Frederick Wiseman, among presenters were also many top-rated commissioning editors and producers. The programme of this year’s IDFAcademy will be available soon.
