Institute of Documentary Film’s Activities
Founded in 2001, the INSTITUTE OF DOCUMENTARY FILM (IDF) is a non-profit training and networking centre based in Prague, Czech Republic, focused on the support of East European documentary films and their wider promotion. Our activities support filmmakers through all stages of completion – development, funding, production, post-production, and distribution. We aim at individual filmmakers (tailored consultations), groups of carefully selected professionals with projects or films (Ex Oriente Film, East European Forum, East Silver, Doc Launch, etc.), broader professional community (East Doc Platform), as well as the general public (portal www.DOKweb.net). We closely work with key int. festivals, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, markets, or training initiatives and serve as the GATEWAY TO EAST EUROPEAN DOCUMENTARY FILM.

Film of the Week: Cans of Time

Planned as a 7-part TV series, Cans of Time (dir. Marek Šulík) will be presented July 6 in Karlovy Vary at the 2010 Docu Talents from the East. In creating an original and engaging impression of Slovakia's history, Cans of Time relies on strong stories rather than a bland chronological account and will combine amateur and stock footage with new material, commentary and interviews.

Cans of Time is conceived as a 7x26min TV series, based on the Family Archives project. The aim of the Family Archives was to collect and digitize amateur film footage from various regions across Slovakia.

In 2008 the project was pitched at the East European Forum in Jihlava.

July 6, 2010, Cans of Time will be presented at the 2010 Docu Talents from the East, along with eight other documentary works-in-progress scheduled for release July 2010 - July 2011. More details here.

CANS OF TIME

Director: Marek Šulík
Producer: Michal Hlavačka, Protos Productions

The Cans of Time is a film rendering of the themes and outcomes of the Family Archives project. The aim of the Family archives was to collect and digitalize amateur film footage from various regions across the Slovak republic. In four years we collected around 400 hours of footage. Apart from the popular and traditional family footage the project has managed to source some rare historical footage such as the one capturing the construction of a huge sculpture of the Slovak politician M.R. Štefánik in 1937, or a few cases of private footage capturing the Russian invasion of 1968. Of an interesting value is also the insight the footage offers into various forms and shapes of the life of the middle classes.
