Institute of Documentary Film’s Activities

Founded in 2001, INSTITUTE OF DOCUMENTARY FILM (IDF) is a non-profit training and networking centre based in Prague, Czech Republic, focused on the support of Central and East European creative documentary film and its wider promotion.

We work closely with Central and East European film directors and producers and provide in-depth development support for their projects as well as international promotion.

We also work with key international festivals, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, markets, film institutions, film schools, MEDIA Desks, training programmes, national film centres and various film portals, and serve as the GATEWAY TO EAST EUROPEAN DOCUMENTARY FILM – an indispensable source of documentary projects and films from Central and Eastern Europe.

reelisor is a freely accessible tool for networking. It connects documentary film professionals, commissioning editors, festivals, markets and other initiatives active in the industry. With its international focus, reelisor grants insights into current productions and topics.

More information about reelisor and its options will be available Monday, October 27 at the Mahler Hotel during the East European Forum industry programme. Another public presentation will take place at DOK Leipzig, Friday October 31. One of reelisor's goals is to provide up-to-date information about documentary projects organized by existing training programmes and this will be the first step in our effort to bring the participants of Ex Oriente Film and East European Forum into the new online community.

Charlotte Meyer, reelisor’s Online Project Manager answers some questions:

What prompted you to establish a new online portal for documentary professionals?

Most festivals plan or already have digital markets and video-libraries of the documentaries which are being screened at the respective festivals. These platforms are accessible before and during the markets, and are mainly generated for the community of registered participants.

These developments are of great value to the documentary industry. Moreover there are several online sites for or by documentary filmmakers, some are, however, quite limited to certain parts of the world or certain topics of the business.

What was missing was a freely accessible umbrella platform for the documentary film business. A platform which brings the key players of the industry together for joint projects, cooperation and training programmes, which connects markets, festivals and documentary filmmakers across borders and throughout the year.

With its new project reelisor, Discovery Campus e.V. – together with its partners IDF, EDN, Sunny Side of the Doc, The D-Word, Channel 4 British Documentary Film Foundation, DOK Leipzig, Dragonforum, ZeLIG and Documentor – is filling this gap.

reelisor allows documentary professionals from all over Europe to register with their personal profile, to present and promote current projects, to find relevant news of the industry and to improve their state of knowledge.

In what stage is the project now and what future steps and development are you planning?

We have (beta-) launched reelisor in August. Documentary film professionals and commissioning editors can already register and sign in on Since then, we are non-stop programming and editing, improving and adding functionalities to the platform. Over 200 members have joined reelisor in the first two months, dozens of projects have been entered, thousands of visitors have started checking out this new offer – and every day we see more members and projects coming.

Registered members (we call them „Reelisors“) can upload their profile, their documentary projects and trailers. They can contact other Reelisors and commissioning editors, find relevant news of the non-fiction business, important festival and business dates, as well as a growing list of useful links.

Our partners, supporters, members and the Reelisors themselves are contributing to the knowledge section. We will soon add an industry guide in the form of a user-generated wiki, a reelisor forum which is hosted by The D-Word and a download area with content from the activities of Discovery Campus and its partners. We will also include sections which can be edited by the users themselves to make reelisor a highly interactive tool for the documentary film business. The implementation of all those features – and of new suggestions by our users – will take another few more months!

And now for some elementary recap: I am 1) a documentary filmmaker, 2) a commissioning editor, 3) a representative from an institution or organization and I open reelisor. What are my options?

All documentary film professionals find relevant news, dates, slot descriptions, networking possibilities and up-to-date information on reelisor – easily at their hand, without going to various sites, and brought to them from a neutral non-profit organisation with many years of experience in the field of documentary training for professionals.

As a documentary filmmaker I can pitch new projects to commissioning editors, find cooperation partners and money, promote finished films.

As commissioning editor I will find new and innovative projects on reelisor, as well as current topics and contacts. A special privacy level allows me to discuss them with colleagues.

Training institutions and organisations present their projects, news and trends. They can describe their business in the documentary wiki and thus help doc professionals to know what exactly they are doing. reelisor offers all of them a perfect tool for documentary networking across borders and throughout the year.
