Founded in 2001, the INSTITUTE OF DOCUMENTARY FILM (IDF) is a non-profit training and networking centre based in Prague, Czech Republic, focused on the support of East European documentary films and their wider promotion. Our activities support filmmakers through all stages of completion – development, funding, production, post-production, and distribution. We aim at individual filmmakers (tailored consultations), groups of carefully selected professionals with projects or films (Ex Oriente Film, East European Forum, East Silver, Doc Launch, etc.), broader professional community (East Doc Platform), as well as the general public (portal www.DOKweb.net). We closely work with key int. festivals, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, markets, or training initiatives and serve as the GATEWAY TO EAST EUROPEAN DOCUMENTARY FILM.

INAUGURAL CZECH LION AWARD FOR DOCUMENTARY FILMS

Czech documentary films will finally receive recognition at this year's Czech Lion awards handed out by the Czech Film and Television Academy (CFTA). In the inaugural edition, judges will be considering all eligible documentaries made from Jan 1, 1993 - Dec 31, 2007. A shortlist of 10 films will then advance to the second round in which CFTA members select three best documentary films. The awards are overseen by CFTA, the Institute of Documentary Film and the Audiovisual Producers' Association.

At this year's Panel of Upcoming Czech Documentary Films, organizers revealed Fifteen Years of Czech Documentary Film, a showcase of documentary films that announces the selection of best documentary films made from 1993 - 2007. Three winners will be announced at the Czech Lion nomination ceremony. The category is overseen by the Czech Film and Television Academy (CFTA), the Institute of Documentary Film (IDF) and the Audiovisual Producers' Association (APA).

“The showcase includes all Czech documentary films made during the period that meet the requirements of the Czech Lion awards, i.e., films with a running time of over 50 minutes and theatrical release,“ says Pavel Strnad (APA), one of the organizers.

The festival runs from September 18 - October 15, 2008 at Světozor and Mat; screenings are open to the general public. A jury of experts will then nominate 10 candidates for the second round in which CFTA members will be voting.

“We are glad that we can use this opportunity to repay, at least in part, our debt to documentary films that couldn't compete in the past. As the next step, we should set up an independent Czech Lion category for best documentary film which will be decided by the CFTA board at the end of September,“
Strnad explains.
