Africa in Motion accepts entries from all filmmakers of African nationality working in Africa or abroad. The festival is particularly interested in giving exposure to young, emerging African filmmakers living and working in Africa. Films could be fiction, animation, experimental or documentary and shot in any format. Fiction films should be no longer than 40 minutes and documentaries no longer than 60 minutes.

The festival was first held in 1987 as a retrospective of African cinema but has gradually evolved into Europe’s biggest African film festival. The programme focuses on new productions. Each year as many filmmakers as possible are invited. Their presence makes for very lively screenings, and boosts the debate with audiences and among the filmmakers. In 2005, the festival became an annual event, featuring films (some in open-air screenings) from Africa and its Diaspora (the Americas, Europe, Surinam, and the Caribbean). The festival screenings take place in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and Eindhoven.

As a tribute to Luis Bunuel’s masterpiece, the Royal Belgian Film Archive awards the Age d’Or Prize to a film of which the authenticity, the peculiarity of purpose and of style mark a break with cinematographic uniformity. This prize amounting to €5000 is granted by the Jacques Ledoux Foundation. During this same competition the Jury will also award two Cinédécouvertes (Film Discovery) Prizes. These prizes (€ 10.000 each), financed by the French Community of Belgium, are granted to two films unreleased in Belgium, which have not yet found a local distributor. The Age d’Or prize and one of the Cinédécouvertes prizes can be awarded to the same film.

L’Agence du court métrage is an association founded in 1983 by a group of professionals (directors, producers and distributors)
wanting to improve the uncertain environment that short film industry experienced in the late 1970’s. The aim was to promote and develop the screening of short films in France, in order to have the films recognised as works of art in the true sense of the word. Today L’Agence du court métrage has become a cinema library of some 10,000 films. It is also working on providing the sector with a structure, as well as developing the screening of short films in France and abroad.
