The festival aims to: Spotlight new European filmmaker with screenings of 100 first European films, presented in 5 competitive sections. Promote the history of cinema and its patrimony with retrospectives of films from different European countries, tributes to major players in the industry - both the famous and the not-so-famous - and thematic programs. Assist screenwriters and directors working on a new project by inviting professional actors to read their screenplays in front of audiences. Introduce new audiences to European cinema, encouraging young film-goers to participate in the Festival and organizing film lessons led by industry professionals. Highlight the diversity of European cinema by bringing together professionals around the questions of production and the circulation of European films.

The competition is organized by the Ars Electronica Center and ORF’s Upper Austria Regional Studio in collaboration with the O.K Center for Contemporary Art and the Brucknerhaus Linz, and the prizes are awarded during the Ars Electronica Festival each year. The Prix Ars Electronica is one of the most important awards for creativity and pioneering spirit in the field of digital media. The event calls for entries in eight categories, including a youth competition and a grant for young creative talents. With over 34,365 entries since 1987 and prize money in 2007 totalling 122,500 euros, the competition offers the largest cash purse for cyberarts worldwide.
