Our approach to documentary filmThe "observational" documentary film technique (also known as cinema verite, fly-on-the-wall or direct cinema) can be best described as "capturing the extraordinary in the ordinary" -- in other words observing daily life and showing the extraordinary things that go on right under our noses. This approach is related to the study of anthropology, in which people are observed over a long period of time. In practise, the filmmaker chooses a character to portray, gets to know them and the people they interact with, follows them around and builds up a portrait that is as honest as possible. The art is in choosing an inspiring character who can communicate naturally in the presence of a video camera.The observational technique avoids voiceovers, interviews and special effects. If done in the right way (with empathy and patience but without irony) the results can be extraordinary. But getting it right is surprisingly difficult -- even though it seems incredibly simple.Fortunately we work with one of the best makers of observational films in Romania, Laurentiu Calciu. Laurentiu studied documentary in Britain's prestigious National Film and Television School (NFTS) in Beaconsfield. Laurentiu has made films in the Scottish highlands, the Greek islands and in Belgrade during the NATO bombing campaign. He won numerous awards for The Land is Waiting.Commenting on a film we made about British aid in Russia, our Russian translator said "I have never seen true Russian life depicted in such a compassionate and realistic way".It is rare for a filmmaker, or cameraman, to be able to film a scene from real life without influencing what is going on. And to make an ordinary scene “come alive” requires a certain magic that few posses.

Profilm Agencja Filmowa sp. z o.o. is one of the largest independent television and film production companies in Poland. Maciej Grzywaczewski is the director of the company. Profilm was founded in 1988. Its areas of activity are constantly being increased, which explains the wide and varied body of work. Our work to date includes: over 50 documentary films, over 20 television series, and music and entertainment shows, 25 music videos and musical monographs for bands, 20 journalistic films, 4 journalistic series, over 40 advertising and promotional films During our 15 years of activity, we have built up a team of creative talents: directors, art directors, operators, production managers, journalists, artists and computer graphics specialists. The successes that we have achieved have encouraged us to take on yet more challenges, such as; the production of a television series “Pete Lost Grandpa’s Eye” directed by Maciej Wojtyszko and the production of the feature film – „The Story Of Two People Who Didn’t Steal A Thing” directed by Łukasz Wylężałk. While the DEFA Foundation, created at the beginning of 1999, is the owner of all rights, Progress Film-Verleih performs the exclusive worldwide distribution-right in all media for the complete film heritage of the German Democratic Republic.

Project Market connects all attending East European professionals with commissioning editors, buyers, sales agents, distributors, film fund and festival representatives. It focuses on one-on-one networking for projects and films in all stages of completion (projects in development, production and post-production, and completed films).

he aim of the workshop is to give young filmmakers from the region a first insight into international co-productions. A pitching training prepares them for organized speed-dating and one-on-one meetings with four young German producers. Benefiting from their experiences and consultance the filmmakers learn how to briefly present their project idea within a scheduled time and to generate interest. It is the first move to find a team partner in order to apply for the Robert Bosch Stiftung Co-Production Prize.

ProLitteris is the Swiss copyright society for literature and art. It was founded in 1974.

The aim of the workshop is to acquaint film archivists and other experts from audiovisual heritage institutions with recent developments concerning filmographic data. The focus will be on two new metadata standards developed by CEN /TC 372, EN 15744:2009 and EN 15907:2010. The project is funded by the European Commission/EFTA.
