In 1993 a seasoned group of independent European producers, led by René Cleitman and David Puttnam, decided to pool together their experience and know-how with the purpose of sharing it with up and coming film producers and advancing the cause of independent cinema. With the support of a large network of industry professionals, they consequently founded ACE, a centre for training and development geared towards helping independent European producers. ACE is a one year project-based training programme. It aims to use the experience and contacts of the senior members of the ACE Network to help the newcomers develop their talent and business. At the end of the year, the producers can choose to remain members of the ACE Network (some 180 members spread over 35 countries), that acts as a co-production club.

Archidoc workshop is intended for ten European documentary makers who have an ongoing documentary project based on archives. Participants of the session will analyze different forms of documentary films using archives, benefit from the advice of leading European documentary filmmakers and producers, and they will be able to exchange ideas about documentary filmmaking and documentary projects with other European colleagues.

Hot Docs and Astral Media's Astral Media Emerging Documentary Filmmakers Scholarship Program is an initiative designed for emerging-level filmmakers in Quebec and British Columbia who intend to pursue documentary production as a long-term career.

The ATELIER LUDWIGSBURG-PARIS is a one-year training programme for budding European film producers and distributors. Well-regarded professionals from the film and media industry teach classes on production and distribution. The Atelier aims to: * convey comprehensive knowledge with a strong practical slant about the European film industry, focussing on script and project development, financing, production, distribution and marketing. * set up and develop a network of young European producers. * establish contacts in the European film industry. * awaken curiosity and enthusiasm for the French and German language, culture and mindset. German - French training programme organised by Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg and La Fémis.

Baltic Media Centre is an independent, non-profit foundation (NGO) promoting democracy, social development and a peaceful international co-operation through the active participation of the media. To stimulate this the centre provides regional, national, and in-house training of media professionals, initiation of international co-productions, legal advice and expert consultancies, networking and other services for radio, television, independent production companies, and print media. One of the activities is the Baltic Sea Forum, which is organized for producers of documentary films and television programmes from the Baltic Sea region.

The target group of the BDC Discoveries 2013 is promising audio-visual professionals, who come from the Balkans or work on a Balkan-related topic and would like to collaborate with the region. The workshop will cover both the creative and production side of documentary project development. The format is 7 teams producer+writer or director. As an exception, directors in search for producers can also be selected. The workshop is conducted in English.

The Berlinale Talent Campus is a creative academy and networking platform for filmmakers from all over the world. The event lasts for six days and offers a huge variety of different programme elements.

Binger Filmlab is an Amsterdam based international feature-film development centre where talented writers, directors, producers and script editors from around the world can place both their projects and their usual working practices within an inspiring environment of fellow filmmakers, to be coached and supported by internationally acclaimed mentors and advisors.

For 20 years now, CARTOON has been organizing several times a year top-level quality training seminars for the European animation professionals: the Cartoon Masters. Designed by a team of experts, the Cartoon Masters are the only vocational seminars available for the animation community on a European level. The programme content gives both a theoretical and practical approach (case studies) on the current issues faced by the industry, focusing on 3 areas: * Cartoon Digital – the opportunities and challenges offered by the new technologies * Cartoon Finance – how to find ways to diversify sources of financing and increase the revenues of animated TV series * Cartoon Feature – all aspects relative to feature film, covering concept, development, production, marketing, distribution and exploitation A fourth Master, Training for Trainers, is specially developed for European animation schools and universities (on invitation only).

CAUCADOC is a project run by Czech NGO People in Need (PIN) and partner organizations from the South Caucasus. CAUCADOC aims to support documentary filmmaking in the South Caucasus, making use of PIN´s experience organizing the world´s largest human rights documentary film festival One World. CAUCADOC includes residential workshops dedicated to the development of creative documentary films from the South Caucasus, a series of master classes and lectures at partnering festivals Golden Apricot IFF, Batumi Art House FF and Tbilisi IFF, and a series of debates focusing on key issues related to audiovisual industry in the region. CAUCADOC also supports local initiatives in organizing screenings and follow up debates throughout the region, as well as the use of documentary films at schools.

Founded in 1955, the CICAE's objectives are to network art cinemas at the national and international levels; to obtain support for arthouse films from government bodies; to promote and to foster the distribution of high quality films. Since 2004 CICAE has been organizing ART CINEMA = ACTION+MANAGEMENT a training targeted to cinema exhibitors wiling to better understanding the keys facts of the profession, to improve their knowledge on running an art cinema, to produce pragmatic tools and projects useful for the whole profession, and to network with 100 European cinema professionals.

Training programme for distributors, exhibitors and festival managers. Aim: To support the diversity of the cinematographic offer by improving the presence and the visibility of Latin-American cinematography in Europe and European cinematography in Latin-America through a training program and a matching up between professionals of diffusion of both continents.

DOX:LAB is a commissioned cross-cultural program, established by CPH:DOX in 2009. It is focused on training, project development and subsequent pitching events at international co-production markets, with the further aim of establishing international networks and long-term professional relationships. At the core of the project lies an actual match and subsequent meeting of a European and non-European filmmaker. The filmmakers are - in pairs of two - invited to develop and produce a film with a development grant donated by CPH:DOX. The filmmakers are given complete creative control, the only demand being that the films should be made in the countries of residence outside of the EU. The ambition of DOX:LAB is to stimulate cultural exchange in cinematic terms, and to create special and challenging works of artistic vision.

Crossing Borders is the international training programme launched by Documentary Campus and the EDN European Documentary Network. It is an international documentary program spanning from the Asia-Pacific region to Europe and back again.

Directors Across Borders (DAB) was established in 2005 to promote the idea that film and its makers are in a unique position to explore and penetrate the borders, to understand the neighbor—in the largest sense of the term. As a co-production forum, it launched within the framework of Golden Apricot - Yerevan International Film Festival. Initially, it was a regional network of film directors and film professionals living in Caucasus and in the neighboring countries: Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkey and etc. - who agreed that cinema is one of the unique tools that could transform human relations without the need for recognizing political, ideological, racial or religious borders. DAB firstly was just a forum of independent filmmakers to determine the common problems typical for states in transition. By emphasizing multinational and multicultural approaches DAB hoped to contribute to establishment of a new ‘common space’ - which would expand from the former Soviet borders and respect the differences of those who have lived together for ages.

Docu Regio is a two-part training program for European regional producers. The initiative is based on a network of European regions already funding documentary production and promoting co-productions among themselves.

The Documentary Campus Masterschool, a European masterclass in project development of documentary films for an international audience, forms the central core of our training initiative. It offers professionals a unique opportunity to find their way into the international non-fiction market and get their documentary project financed. Under the aegis of the Documentary Campus Masterschool, which makes a call for submissions once a year, up to 15 European authors and directors develop their documentaries. The range of genres developed in the Masterschool encompasses all kinds of creative documentaries, series, formats or multiplatform. All non-fiction formats that are internationally distributed are supported. The Masterschool consists of four main workshops that target story development and scriptwriting; international coproduction and financing; distribution and marketing; and project presentation and pitching. The Documentary Filmmakers Group - DFG - is the national organisation working to promote documentary filmmaking talent and innovation in the UK. A single aim links all our work: to encourage, stimulate, promote and support the growth of a strong community of documentary filmmakers and film audiences. We have been running since 2001, operating as a non-profit organisation. Our presence, our activities and our community continue to expand, showing that there is real demand for a group dedicated to serving the needs of documentary film in all its aspects. DFG is the leading provider of industry-focussed training for established and aspiring documentary filmmakers and a member of the elite Skillset Media Academy Network. We run a range of networking, information and advice events for documentary filmmakers at different stages in their careers, as well as pitching opportunities and screenings. We also provide a number of resources for our members, a growing community of documentary filmmakers. Through our unique partnership with the award-winning Mosaic Films, DFG provides a combined level of expertise that positions us to collaborate on a range of exciting training and film production initiatives in partnership with Channel 4, Five, and ITV, amongst other organisations. In keeping with our mission statement, these initiatives are designed either to promote talent, diversity and equal opportunities within the documentary filmmaking industry, or to promote innovation in a particular strand of documentary programming.

Final Cut Pro Editing Week covers the fundamentals of documentary editing, using industry relevant equipment, Final Cut Pro software and important areas such as preparing a project for the edit and the Grammar of Editing.

DOK.Incubator workshop is new initiative aiming to strengthen creative documentary industry bringing new impulses in the way of film production and use of the new media and internet platforms, especially in late stage of production. Through the development of rough-cut stage documentary films DOK.Incubator workshop aims to inspire film professionals with fresh ways of thinking about international film release, distribution, sophisticated marketing and actively working with audiences. The workshop is a follow-up to documentary development workshops and it is open to European producers with promising international project.

EAVE is a professional organisation providing an intensive and innovative professional training programme which develops the skills of already well-established European film, television and documentary producers and related professionals. The aim of the programme is to renew and improve production and co-production methods and to encourage co-operation. EAVE provides long and short seminars - the workshops and the forums - as well as continuous services on-line to European producers and professionals.

EAVE’s flagship programme has been running for over twenty years and has created a thriving network of over 1000 graduates. It is a year long programme focused on three intensive weeks featuring professional development through working on the development of fiction and documentary projects. Each year some 50 producers from around 30 European countries work on script and project development, financing, financial planning and company development, legal issues of co-production, marketing, packaging and pitching. During the final week of the programme 40–50 ‘decision makers’ – leading television commissioning editors, sales agents, distributors, representatives of regional and national funds and senior producers – meet the participants to discuss their projects, companies and plans. Participants can attend with or without a project and writers are encouraged to attend the first two weeks. The Workshop is also open to other members of the industry, for example lawyers and people working with media agencies and sales companies. The European Producers Workshop has created an extremely active and successful network which has enabled participants to form long term co-producing relationships. Films developed during the programme and those subsequently produced by EAVE graduates have won major prizes at all the world’s leading festivals.
