As a public service television channel, ARTE showcases Europe’s rich cultural diversity. Its purpose is “to conceive and produce television programmes which, in a broad sense, are cultural and international in character and conducive to promoting understanding and cooperation between european nations”. Subdivided into three main companies: ARTE France, ARTE Deutschland, ARTE G.E.I.E., the group employs staff from France, Germany and other European countries. In both France and Germany, 95% of funding for the channel comes from the direct tax on home television sets. Based on an agreement between France and Germany, the channel is financed through the television licence fee in both countries. With its Europe-wide reach, ARTE has also developed a range of successful partnerships for co-production and exchange of programmes with the major European public service broadcasters.
ARTE G.E.I.E. - the Strasbourg headquarters is in charge of programme strategy, commissioning policy and scheduling. It is responsible for broadcasting and on-air promotion and provides the language services required for multilingual transmission. It also produces news, magazine programmes and some of the theme evenings. In addition to this, ARTE G.E.I.E. plans and co-ordinates public relations activities and manages relations with European partners.
