Founded in 2001, the INSTITUTE OF DOCUMENTARY FILM (IDF) is a non-profit training and networking centre based in Prague, Czech Republic, focused on the support of East European documentary films and their wider promotion. Our activities support filmmakers through all stages of completion – development, funding, production, post-production, and distribution. We aim at individual filmmakers (tailored consultations), groups of carefully selected professionals with projects or films (Ex Oriente Film, East European Forum, East Silver, Doc Launch, etc.), broader professional community (East Doc Platform), as well as the general public (portal www.DOKweb.net). We closely work with key int. festivals, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, markets, or training initiatives and serve as the GATEWAY TO EAST EUROPEAN DOCUMENTARY FILM.

Aqua Fosilot Medica

Aqua Fosilot Medica, Czech Republic, 2004, 30 min, DV, Creative, Experimental, Human Rights, Portrait
Real story of a ninety-year-old Sardinian shepherd, who wants to cure the mankind. Since his youth, this exceptional man has been reading various encyclopedias. From books and his own experience he creates original theories about how the world could work better.

An encyclopaedist from Sardinia, a 90-year old autodidact takes interest in current events only as long as they connect with the text of his book of books, i.e. the encyclopaedia that ensured his education and still determines his mindset. We never get to see the book though we are invited into his library. The camera follows the man on his walks on the island, his long commentaries are interrupted only by shots of the beach. His distinct view of creation is influenced by his readings and observations of natural transformations. The sea, light, clouds and people are intertwined with the memory of the text that is curiously shifted by the combinations of encyclopaedic entries. This documentary film is a portrait of a lonely old man who was long ago denied education. In spite of that he gradually covered his ignorance with signs and the encyclopaedic knowledge became not just a provisional model but the truth that contains the island and the whole world.
