Institute of Documentary Film’s Activities
Founded in 2001, the INSTITUTE OF DOCUMENTARY FILM (IDF) is a non-profit training and networking centre based in Prague, Czech Republic, focused on the support of East European documentary films and their wider promotion. Our activities support filmmakers through all stages of completion – development, funding, production, post-production, and distribution. We aim at individual filmmakers (tailored consultations), groups of carefully selected professionals with projects or films (Ex Oriente Film, East European Forum, East Silver, Doc Launch, etc.), broader professional community (East Doc Platform), as well as the general public (portal www.DOKweb.net). We closely work with key int. festivals, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, markets, or training initiatives and serve as the GATEWAY TO EAST EUROPEAN DOCUMENTARY FILM.

Big Deal

Big Deal - Architekt a jeho pán, Czech Republic, 2006, 58 min, DV
Young Czech architects and their ways to the success.
The film, having the same name as the exhibition, is to map the young architectural generation who are now in their thirties. They have become renown after completing several successful projects and have established offices with several employees. And what is more, the ten chosen offices haven't abandoned the pursuit of quality architecture. We are trying to bring into light the milestones of their architectural work, both concepts and realized projects, which determined the future of the offices, or even caused the establishment of some of them. We are interested in the relationship of a contractor and an architect - it does not matter if it is the architect-developer relationship, the architect- town relationship or the architect- small private investor one. Also we are focusing on the architects' attitude to the public, on the boundaries of their freedom in communication with investors: the intention was not to present the entire work of the offices.
The things they may need to face on their climb to the top on an imaginary ladder of success - the falls, insecure positions, or even the knocking out other competitors are inseparable part of it all. The choice of offices was based on the ways in which the young studios can make their way to the bigger commissions. Our aim is not only to show the mechanisms of architectural office development but also to point out the problems accompanying it. Balancing on the edge of creative freedom and good quality architecture on one hand and commercial success on the other is the challenge they are all trying to respond to. Interviews with architects and investors, presentation of break-through projects with comments, drawings, 3D renderings and plans create the framework of the film.
