Children On Death Row

Děti na popravišti, Czech Republic, 2010, 26 min, Beta SP, Human Rights, Politics, Social Issues
Amnesty International says Iran is the only country that executes young people for crimes they committed when they were younger than 18 years old. The film is a story of Iranian lawyer Mohammad Mostafaei and his four young clients. Mr. Mostafaei has already presented in court the case of some 40 juvenile offenders facing the death penalty. He has managed so far to save the life of 14 of them. He says three more of his clients are likely to be released. Four young clients were executed. Mohammad Mostafaei is a leading lawyer against juvenile execution, he represents the highest number of children on death row in Iran and so in the world. According to unofficial figures - Iran does not release figures of executed children - between 80 to 100 juvenile offenders have been hanged in the Islamic Republic since 1990. In no other country so many children have been executed in that time period. The sentencing of minors to death is a violation of Iran's international human rights commitments, including the Convention of the Rights of the Child. Iranian courts follow the Islamic law of Sharia under which boys older than 15 and girls older than 9 years old are considered to be adults. Eight of his clients have been sentenced to death and are currently being waiting to be executed. His other clients are in jail, waiting for the decision of the courts, in come cases they've appealled against their sentences and are waiting for the decision of the appeal court.
