Obscurantist and His Lineage or The Pyramids' Tearful Valleys

Tmář a jeho rod aneb Slzavé údolí pyramid , Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, 2011, 199 min, 35 mm, DCP, Creative, Society
The most recent film-novel by the Czech classic film-maker, Karel Vachek, is on the subject of alien civilisations, who do not just live in the cosmos but on planet Earth itself. The film is accompanied by citations from the famous musical Mam´zelle Nitouche, which confronts the environments of the convent, theatre and army barracks. Symbolically, the director brings us to these settings wishing to tackle the thin dividing line between real innermost faith in God and institutionalised faith. Surprisingly, Vachek also finds accord between the most recent scientific hypotheses and ancient religious texts – for example, relating to multi-dimensional spaces. In the film Balkan warriors ´meet´ supernatural spooks, who open people´s drawers and overturn armchairs. The advertising slogan of British atheists, ´There`s Probably No God!´ introduces the Papal visit to the Czech Republic. Barack Obama hid from Vachek´s camera behind some reading apparatus and the director uses the cutting-room to confront him with the hypothesis that even the American president is not allowed to know where billions of dollars from the Defence Ministry budget are spent. Obscurantist was filmed in the USA, Japan, Great Britain, Bosna and Herzegovina, Slovakia, Poland, Austria, Germany as well as the Czech Republic. Among many others appearing in the film, we also meet world-famous mysteriologists, Erich von Däniken and Raymond Moody.
