The End Of The Road
Eastern Hungary 2001 - 2002. Village life offers nothing but hard, poorly-paid work in agriculture and living standards on the edge of poverty. Director Tamás Almási follows a family who decide to improve their lot and create conditions under which their children can have a better life, with their only option being to move to the city and work in a foreign factory. Hopes for the future enable them to overcome separation from their children and having to live in a hostel. During rare trips home they speak with neighbours who are trying to create better conditions there through small scale business activities. When the couple rent a flat with the help of their employer, their children join them, giving rise to a new aim: to find a house, or at least a garden, in the city. But their dreams of a better life begin to fade the moment things take a downturn at the factory.
From Home To Home
Our film`s protagonists were born outside Hungary`s current borders. They resettled in Hungary between 1980 and 1991, hoping to find a better and freer life in the mother country. And that`s when the blows came.
Being Decorated
In 1978 the socialist women brigade of the Clothes Factory in Zalaegerszeg got the upper most state award in the Parliament. These women believed in the system. They toiled till late at night and lived in a worker`s hostel for years. As first-generation women workers they believed, because they were made to, that this was their world. This world has disappeared by now. These women still exist; they live among us.
Our Own Little Europe
After the political change in Hungary, the town of Ózd has become the symbol of unemployment and hoplessness . On the 12th of April 2003, there was a plebiscite on Hungary joining the EU . Did the people of Ózd see a unique historical opportunity in this? We'd followed their attempts and captured the changes that took place during the first 2 years after Hungary has joined the EU.
Take Three
At 18 they rebell. At 24 they make plans, dream and try to find their place in the world. At 31 some of them have made a career, others bring up children. Their life is transformed by the political system change in 1989 in Hungary. In Take Three these people at 40 encounter their former selves, their whole life. Whether they are stars, single people, parents, top executives or employees, for all of them the big question is ultimately the same; what will make them wake up at 50.
Our Cells
They say there are two things for which people are prepared to do anything: not to have or to have children…. Our heroes’ greatest desire was to have a baby. The hop was in vain, long years passed before it became clear that only in vitro fertilization, a test-tube baby programme, could help them. The period after that is not an easy one. Euphoria or hopelessness elevates or depresses them; they have to be able to stand physical and mental strain and the constant test of their love. But before them all is the great common goal: the baby… In Hungary every tenth marriage or cohabitation is infertile. For two and half years the film follows the fate of three couples in their struggle for a child. Louise Brown, the first test-tube baby, was born in 1978. Since then one million newborn babies have come into the world by means of in vitro fertilization.
Mario, the Magician
At the beginning of the 1990s, not long after the change in regime, a miracle occurs in a tiny sleepy Hungarian village with the arrival of Mario, the elegant Italian shoe manufacturer. He promises jobs and wellbeing to the local women, setting the village in motion. Vera cannot resist the charisma of the Italian either. She becomes more and more enchanted by the man's special charm. And she feels the Italian is not indifferent to her either. She dreams obsessively about a better life at Mario's side.
Puskás Hungary
This documentary tells the story of legendary soccer player Ferenc Puskás, who started from the Budapest slums and became an international star, living his life irrespective of politics, war and conventions of society, doing the one thing he loved and knew best: play soccer. This movie is about this mystic figure, the captain of the legendary Magical Magyars Team of the 1950s, who overcame poverty, calamities such as World War II, and the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, and who, after a physical and mental breakdown, returned to the top with an amazing effort once again in his 30's, and became a world- renowned forward for the Real Madrid.
