Institute of Documentary Film’s Activities
Founded in 2001, the INSTITUTE OF DOCUMENTARY FILM (IDF) is a non-profit training and networking centre based in Prague, Czech Republic, focused on the support of East European documentary films and their wider promotion. Our activities support filmmakers through all stages of completion – development, funding, production, post-production, and distribution. We aim at individual filmmakers (tailored consultations), groups of carefully selected professionals with projects or films (Ex Oriente Film, East European Forum, East Silver, Doc Launch, etc.), broader professional community (East Doc Platform), as well as the general public (portal www.DOKweb.net). We closely work with key int. festivals, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, markets, or training initiatives and serve as the GATEWAY TO EAST EUROPEAN DOCUMENTARY FILM.

Cmíral Ladislav

Make a Wish Upon Falling Shit
A powerful portrait of a young loner who creates a fascinating space of brutal web pages ranging between black humor and actual pages graced with corpses. The film suggests the creation of a new culture (or an underground movement rather) with a life of its own. "Perhaps you could set it all up as a contrast the fact that in real life I'm normal, conservative, and lacking common human vices. But at the same time I'm able to come up with things which deviate from the standard moral code. In highfalutin terms, I feel like an elegantly dressed man wearing white gloves who sells people beautifully wrapped 'shit'" (from an email message from the filmmaker).

A Catapult of Fate
A creative documentary film portrait of Olda Říha, frontman of a famous Czech rock band Katapult celebrating 35 years of its existence. The first day of shooting captures the funeral of bass guitar player and Říha's lifelong friend Jiří "Old Man" Šindelář in January 2009 and the last day of shooting records an opening concert of the new album tour "Joys of Life", which took place in the largest church in Eastern Bohemia. Almost a thousand people attended the concert. The film follows the music, but particularly the life path of Říha and his band Katapult from the "church of death" to the "church of rebirth." It is a path full of doubt, fault, conflict and happiness, but above all it is a journey with no end. Against the backdrop of the death and rebirth of the band, open and often conflicting situations take place between director Jan Gogola and Olda Říha, making it possible to find out whether Říha really sings what he lives and lives what he sings.

Fledglings
Sixteen eight-year-old classmates mostly of Roma descent are the protagonists of Fledglings, a 16-part docu-soap in which the children were given cameras and, for a period of one year, captured the world and events around them. Shot from September 2009 to August 2010, Fledglings is the first Czech docu-soap project, with a few elements of reality show. In more than 500 hours of footage, the children at times find themselves in situations they would not otherwise be exposed to but finding the right solution and approach is always entirely up to them.
