Institute of Documentary Film’s Activities
Founded in 2001, the INSTITUTE OF DOCUMENTARY FILM (IDF) is a non-profit training and networking centre based in Prague, Czech Republic, focused on the support of East European documentary films and their wider promotion. Our activities support filmmakers through all stages of completion – development, funding, production, post-production, and distribution. We aim at individual filmmakers (tailored consultations), groups of carefully selected professionals with projects or films (Ex Oriente Film, East European Forum, East Silver, Doc Launch, etc.), broader professional community (East Doc Platform), as well as the general public (portal www.DOKweb.net). We closely work with key int. festivals, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, markets, or training initiatives and serve as the GATEWAY TO EAST EUROPEAN DOCUMENTARY FILM.

Čtveráček Karel

A Man Who Painted the Sea
Shortly before his death - in the seclusion of a small Prague flat - Jindřich Vik, a bank clerk and a naive painter, took his brush and water colours and started painting in an outburst of creative effort that lasted for a year and resulted in hundreds of drawings, mapping almost all his life. We embark on a journey back through time and in his drawings relive the most humble moments of a human life, seeing an old man bent over a yellow sheet of paper, struggling with his imagination and memory, turning back once again to look at his life and trying to grasp its meaning.

Die Bienen Flogen schon
The reconstruction of the photographic Atelier Seidel in Český Krumlov and the rediscovery of a unique collection of nearly 140,000 historical photographs becomes not only the basis for the narrative of a life-story of two photographers – father and son, but also leads to the revival of Czech-German dialogue, and to the reconstruction of the long-gone lives and culture. It brings us to a general meditation over photography, which serves here not only as historical testimony, but also as a means of experiencing and remembering.

Epopeja
EPOPEJA is a documentary exploring the world (especially the Slavic one); it is a testimony about the process of forming new opinions, new communities and even of new mythologies. It attempts to approach an extraordinary spiritual artefact that encloses the Slav Epic, the unique opus of Alphonse Mucha. Through thoughts, feelings and interpretations, the docume ntary asks how the work resonates with the feelings of contemporary society. To re-explore the canvases of the Slav Epic means to gradually establish the world of its author as well as the world of ancient and contemporary Slavs. We set out to explore our ancestors’ footprints to track the living and lived picture of the Slavic identity.
