Schindler's Houses
"Schindler`s Houses" shows forty buildings by the Austro-American architect Rudolph Schindler from the years 1931 to 1952. Schindler`s pioneering work in Southern California is the cornerstone of a branch of modern architecture. All the material for the film was shot in May 2006. The film is thus also an up-to-date portrait of urban life in Los Angeles that has never been documented in this form before.Directors statement"Architecture projects space into this world. Cinemaphotography translates that space into pictures projected in time. Cinema then is used in a completely new way: as a space to meditate on buildings."
Two Projects by Frederick Kiesler
Architecture as Biography. The film explores two projects by Austrian artist and visionary Frederick Kiesler (1890-1965): the model for an “Endless House” (1959) that is currently exhibited at the Kiesler Foundation Vienna, and “The Shrine of the Book”, designed and built in collaboration with Armand Bartos on the grounds of the Israel Museum in Jerusalem (1959-1965). The film was shot in June 2006. It is the third and final part of a trilogy of films dealing with the buildings of Adolf Loos, Rudolph M. Schindler and Frederick Kiesler.
The Future's Past
Employing the Khmer Rouge Tribunal as a starting point, the award-winning filmmaker Susanne Brandstätter takes a deeper look into the lives of young people on the brink of adulthood. As the trial accusing a perpetrator of the Pol Pot regime progresses, it becomes a catalyst for a new generation of Cambodians questioning their parents, families and neighbors about the inhumanities their nation has suffered. Brandstätter accompanies three families on two different continents – two cambodian families and an immigrated cambodian family in Paris, France – recognizing that the truth is only to be found among those who survived and that the past can best be questioned by those who are about to build a future.
The 727 Days Without Karamo
In “The 727 days without Karamo”, couples, whose love is put to a special test, give us insight into their lives. One partner of each couple is not originally from Europe and the lovers find themselves confronted with immigration law and its impact. Anja Salomonowitz combines very different facets into an exciting, very moving and strongly expressive documentary mosaic. A compelling, filmic plea for love without borders.
