Institute of Documentary Film’s Activities
Founded in 2001, the INSTITUTE OF DOCUMENTARY FILM (IDF) is a non-profit training and networking centre based in Prague, Czech Republic, focused on the support of East European documentary films and their wider promotion. Our activities support filmmakers through all stages of completion – development, funding, production, post-production, and distribution. We aim at individual filmmakers (tailored consultations), groups of carefully selected professionals with projects or films (Ex Oriente Film, East European Forum, East Silver, Doc Launch, etc.), broader professional community (East Doc Platform), as well as the general public (portal www.DOKweb.net). We closely work with key int. festivals, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, markets, or training initiatives and serve as the GATEWAY TO EAST EUROPEAN DOCUMENTARY FILM.

Felt Ivo

Afanassi
Russian granfather and Estonian grandaughter - the two embark on a journey across the grandfather`s homeland of Russia to discover each other. Virtually strangers when they begin, they learn much about each other likenesses and diffirences by the conclusion of their trek. The film explores the concept the even though years and geographical differences may seemingly separate two individuals, family relationship are bone-deep and always surface in the heart.

Jaan Toomik
Life is full of tragedies. One of the cruellest kind took place on September 11 1997 in Kurkse strait, Republic of Estonia, when Neptune clasped 22 young innocent men who were wearing military uniforms. The documentary Trip To Valhalla is a double portrait of opposing heroes of this tragedy – harbour captain Heino Kreintal and lieutenant Jaanus Karm. The saver and the saved. The film analyses the dilemma of guilt and guiltlessness resulting from the tragedy in the nature, memories and the present day of both men. It studies the consequences of what happened to the human soul, changes in the human mind and personalities. On the background there is the young state of Estonia.

Georg
“Georg” tells the true story of Estonia’s most famous and loved singer GEORG OTS (1920-1975) and his fate in his artistic as well as private life. The exceptionally talented singer remained unknown on opera stages around the world. In addition to his Estonian fans, he found adoration only among the audiences of Russia and Finland. Those were the times. The Soviet regime found him suspicious. The film tells the singer’s story; speaks of his fate, formed by complicated years full of change. It’s a personal story – one of love, intrigue, and family.

Silent Surrender
How does it feel to be a 10-year-old in the whirlwind of history? How does it feel to be an adult in a state that enjoys the spoils of success one day and disappears from the map the next? Silent Surrender is a film about that fatal year for Estonia, about freedom and compulsion, about the things done and left undone. Is it possible to learn from history?
