During World War II, tram line no. 41 crossed through the Ghetto of Łódź, one of the most forlorn, organized, violent civic places within Europe at that time. Tram passengers were Łódź citizens who saw what was happening to their Jewish neighbors. They had been forced in into a fortified district called “Litzmannstadt”. Today a visit to this district reveals a place that rarely changed in time – now inhabited, lively, and run-down. Natan Grossmann returns to his place of birth, searching for the lost traces of his brother and parents who where locked up in this ghetto. Today, one of the Łódź visitors is Jens-Jürgen Ventzki, the son of the former German “Litzmannstadt” major, responsible for the ghetto organization and the deaths of the inhabitants. We roam the districts of Łódź, finding out about the lives in these ‘parallel worlds’, about Łódź citizens living normal lives, some of them architects of death.
