Transcarpathian Ukraine, formerly the Upper Hungarian Lands within the Austro-Hungarian Empire, became a part of the Czechoslovak Republic after World War I. Twenty years later the union split up; nevertheless, even its short existence initiated cordial and profound relations between the two countries. About 35,000 Czechs, Moravians and Silesians lived in the region in the early 1930s. As a result of the Munich treaty, the southern part of the Sub-Carpathian Region passed over to Hungary. With another treaty - that of July 29, 1945 - Czechoslovakia acknowledged the fact that Sub-Carpathian Ukraine had been annexed by the Soviet Union. What memories of Czechoslovakia do the locals have? What do their grandsons, seeking work in the Czech Republic, think about us? Can they speak Czech? Are there still traces of Czech buildings and infrastructure?
