Gladik Ulli
Ulli Gladik meets Natasha the beggar in Graz and, after a number of conversations, accompanies Natasha to her home of Breznik, a former industrial town near Sofia. Over a period of two years, Gladik, a combination camera woman and director, visits Natasha in Bulgaria and Austria, documenting the young woman's life - her journeys and traveling companions, her work as a beggar, her home in Graz, her family life and her everyday routine in Bulgaria.
Three Cents
Winter 2004, Sofia, Bulgaria. Children are raising their family`s income by cleaning windshields of cars on crossroads. People are pushing small carts from one garbage can to the next to find food, heating material and items to resell. I walked around Sofia and interviewed and filmed some of these people. I was a photographer, director and interviewer in one person with a very small equipment, so they talked very openly about their situation.
Shopping centers have been booming in European cities for many years. They are very popular for the customers but also controversial in public discussions. They are changing economic structures, social relations and form the appearance of our cities. The documentary "Global Town" (working title) of Ulli Gladik follows this movement: the film meets and follows important players in development, marketing and architecture, also politicians, consumers and retailers in different countries all around Europe - in Germany for example, where a new trend of inner city shopping malls is currently arising on the other hand in Romania a boom and bubble was recognized.
