Hanuljak Adam

Protected Territory
The actors of the Theatre from the Passage from Slovakia live a dream and they protect it carefully. They were given a chance to break the anonymity of disabled people from the sanatoriums, they were given a chance to prove that their bounds are different from what they and their parents were told and what the whole society believed. They were given freedom to test the real limits of their handicaps on their way through a virtual passage to the world of healthy people. They could challenge their bounds which may lie further than the bounds of internal freedom of many non-handicaped people. The documentary feature Protected Territory depicts three week long dreamed-of tour of the Theatre from the Passage in USA. The journey of this specific theatre group is full of challenges and difficulties which can be overcome only with bit of improvisation and patience, but most of all with enormous effort of all members of the group. Besides the journey itself, the theme of the theatre play gives the documentary another dimension as each actor interprets his own ideas about protected and unprotected worlds and about the boundaries between them. In an intimate way, the documentary depicts the lives of people who were supposed to stay behind the closed doors of the sanatoriums for all of their lives and yet they managed to make incredible things true.
