Institute of Documentary Film’s Activities
Founded in 2001, the INSTITUTE OF DOCUMENTARY FILM (IDF) is a non-profit training and networking centre based in Prague, Czech Republic, focused on the support of East European documentary films and their wider promotion. Our activities support filmmakers through all stages of completion – development, funding, production, post-production, and distribution. We aim at individual filmmakers (tailored consultations), groups of carefully selected professionals with projects or films (Ex Oriente Film, East European Forum, East Silver, Doc Launch, etc.), broader professional community (East Doc Platform), as well as the general public (portal www.DOKweb.net). We closely work with key int. festivals, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, markets, or training initiatives and serve as the GATEWAY TO EAST EUROPEAN DOCUMENTARY FILM.

Kovačević Mladen

Dumbfounded Hog
Every second household in Serbian countryside keeps pigs. The majority of Serbian pigs lives and dies in cruel conditions; less than one third are slaughtered in slaughterhouses, and the other two thirds get slaughtered by the “slayers” (“professional slaughterers” also known as “pig’s orthopaedists”) in village courtyards, livestock markets, at sides of roads, at fairs and carnivals. The implementation of the new Animal welfare and Food safety laws foretells the radical change of lifestyle of Serbian pigs. Through scientific and traditional aspects of the story of pig welfare, we are observing the Serbian countryside, the conditions in agriculture, and the inevitable change in Serbian society instigated by the desire for integration into EU.

Unplugged
“Unplugged” is an existential allegory about blowing into leaves, rattling between the most primitive of instruments and the most universal escapism of music. Meet Josip, amateur inventor set out to decode the artistry of leaf-playing, and the last leaf-players – Vera, ex private detective, and Pera, the know-it-all peasant – in the autumns of their lives, still going for the verdant leaves. Music has rarely been so offbeat.

Mladen Kovacevic has studied film in Belgrade, LIFS in London, and CTFTVS and AFDA in South Africa. Besides his directorial fictional projects, since two years ago he made two commissioned documentaries, and one thematic documentary. He is currently shooting a debut documentary feature “Unplugged” (a Serbian-Finnish co-production) and also developing an offbeat architectural documentary “Palace”, and a documentary about the family of carnival stunt bikers “The Wall of Death, and All That”.
