Founded in 2001, the INSTITUTE OF DOCUMENTARY FILM (IDF) is a non-profit training and networking centre based in Prague, Czech Republic, focused on the support of East European documentary films and their wider promotion. Our activities support filmmakers through all stages of completion – development, funding, production, post-production, and distribution. We aim at individual filmmakers (tailored consultations), groups of carefully selected professionals with projects or films (Ex Oriente Film, East European Forum, East Silver, Doc Launch, etc.), broader professional community (East Doc Platform), as well as the general public (portal www.DOKweb.net). We closely work with key int. festivals, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, markets, or training initiatives and serve as the GATEWAY TO EAST EUROPEAN DOCUMENTARY FILM.

Chicken Elections
Chicken elections is a film on contemporary social life in the rural Balkans. In this story an old Serbian peasant woman is trying to learn how to operate a used cell phone which she got from her grandchild, a local traffic policeman... Finally, when she somehow learns to use it, she dies...So, this story becomes the metaphor of the dying province and the absurdity of the development in transition countries...Chicken Election is funny, sad and beatiful ironic story of solitude, depopulation, and death before death...

With Fidel Whatever Happens
Sierra Maestra, Cuba, 850 km east of Havana. The day before the celebration of the 52nd anniversary of the Revolution. An old man is repairing a few decades old motorcycle. A young dentist is trying to find some transport to a clinic in remote mountains. A middle-aged married couple run a public telephone booth in their modest house for villagers who have no phone. Fates of these people and many other inhabitants of Sierra Maestra are depicted on a day of ideological ecstasy, the day of the celebration of the 52nd anniversary of the Revolution. And the following day? The next day, driven by inertia, they all return to the rhythm of everyday life which is the same and is not very promising. But the revolution continues... For how long?

Columba Urbica
The free market and competition principles do not only govern the upper strata of society, but also determine marginal lives. In this respect, the life of drifters and other outcasts does not differ from that of the bourgeoisie. Columba urbica is a tragicomic illustration of that fact. The film, having as its subtitle 'short Darwinian film in Belgrade 1994', shows the survival strategy of the gypsy Jasar Dzemalov, who lives in an illegal, humble dwelling he has built against a medieval castle in Belgrade. For a long time he provided for himself by taking food from trash cans, but due to increased competition the war inflation in Belgrade has reduced many aged people to beggary he was forced to find his food in another way. An inventive solution sprang to his mind when he saw the city's pigeons. Now he usually eats them with relish: "I mainly eat like a prince."
