In 2009, after renovating the underground station Kurskaja in Moscow, also the lines of the Soviet anthem from 1943 regained its old splendour: Through storms the sun of freedom has shined upon us / And the great Lenin has lighted the way / Stalin has taught us faithfulness to the people / To labour, and inspired us to great feats! The authors of the film ask ordinary passers-by and passengers on the underground, who Stalin was for them and how he is perceived nowadays. A large part of society does not believe the historical facts. Many dream of the dictator and great Russia. Stalin's cult is still alive.
On August 25, 1968, a group of seven people gathered on Red Square in Moscow to protest against the invasion of Czechoslovakia by Warsaw Pact troops. 5 minutes of freedom at the main Soviet square cost them years in camps, exile and prison. We meet the surviving protagonists of that protest and show the new generation of democratic rights fighters in the present-day Russia. Our camera follows young opposition movement activists, helping us to find an answer to the question: who are modern dissidents? And what sacrifices are they willing to make in order to live in a democratic society?
