On Decency
Mr. K., a sturdy miner in his fifties, sits in the living room of his spacious apartment in a block of flats. He is exhausted and can hardly control his emotions. He is on the verge of crying. "I hate them. The only thing they know is how to make children, destroy things and mess around. That's their culture." Mrs. E., a well-dressed elderly lady, is sitting at her favorite table in her favorite restaurant. "The new owners started letting them in. So we explained to them that if they turn it into a gypsy bar we'll stop coming. They stopped letting them in. It's been quiet ever since." A film essay about decency. Everyday banal situations shed light onto those dark, hidden places in us that unveil the thin border separating normality from abnormality and point to the failure of the multicultural social model.
The final stretch of the D8 highway across the České středohoří national park is the last project for a 72-year-old engineer. He would like to see it finished, to show it to his grandsons as his legacy and to finally retire. However, the 16-kilometer stretch of highway between Prague and Berlin takes forever to complete. Lawsuits follow one after another and the national park is crossed not by a stretch of concrete but only by a dotted line in the map. The national park thus becomes the playing field for a fundamental clash of opinions with the highway torso in the background – a torso which nobody wanted in the first place. In set-up situations, the film analyses the reasons why and how our living space is being filled with an engineering project that will stay there forever, and what this has to say about the rules of our world.
Gottland
Based on stories selected from the bestseller Gottland by Polish author Mariusz Szczygiel, a series of film essays will be made by six FAMU students, describing the Czech national history from the perspective of one who never won. Surrounded by superpowers in its geopolitical space, Czechoslovakia has always had to manoeuvre within the limits set by others (e.g. when fighting for the unwanted Emperor of Austria in World War I, suffering the trauma of the Munich Pact etc.). Unable to decide about their own fate, Czechs had to develop a strategy of constant compromise-seeking behaviour and peaceful solutions, assuming the position of the "absent one", since that was the most advantageous way of defence; minimizing the experience of loss, however, leaving behind a great moral mutilation. In comparison with other nations of the world, nothing much ever happened to Czechs and nothing much ever will.
Toytravel story
Mr. Marek appears before a committee of successful entrepreneurs. During the televised presentation he is overcome by stage-fright and can only muster a few incoherent sentences. He is trying to convince the committee to invest into a travel agency for toys. Most viewers following his performance on their TV screens as well as the studio audience think that he has gone made or is simply trying to attract media attention. Their shock is all that much greater when Mr. Marek actually finds some investors. Tomio Okamura, owner of a successful travel agency, sensed the hidden potential of this business proposal. And this is how a travel agency for toys was born. A film about the search for certainty, about escaping from the world surrounding us, about why we want to stay children. A film about toys travelling. A film about mass media reality and how it's created. And a film about one dream that came true.
The Prison of Art
This feature documentary film follows a unique art project that connects Czech prisoners and artists, traces the border between freedom and the absence thereof, and looks at the role art plays in our society. A film about freedom and about how your environment informs your view of the world, a film about art and its possibilities. A film about trends, fads and about the limits of grant-based projects.
