Jan Koniarek / By the Wall
In the course of the four seasons, we present the rise of Slovak sculpture, focusing on the work of Ján Koniarek [1878 – 1952]. The film is built around the preparations for a stage performance of a one-man act using the protagonist and the testimonies of experts and lay enthusiasts from Slovakia and Serbia. Ján Koniarek studied in Budapest, Rome, and Munich. During his nine-year long sojourn in Belgrade, he became well-known for his monumental and portrait works of the local leading figures. Back home, oppressed by the political and bureaucratic powers, he gained recognition only at the end of his life. In the spirit of Christian apostolate, his work reveals the power of authentic experience and sculpture mastery with a wide range of means of expression and human knowledge. These too are the reasons why art historians agree that he was the founder of Slovak sculpture.
