The Penalty
France, 1938. Poland vs. Brazil game in the Football World Cup. Polish national team at their first appearance in the World Cup Finals is losing against Brazil 5-6 during overtime. The first goal for Poland in the World Cup was scored by a Polish citizen with German nationality. Fryderyk Scherfke came back from the World Cup in 1938 as a national hero. But World War two changed all that.Scherfke survived. But he was condemned to oblivion and infamy. For the rest of his life he was black listed in Poland as a traitor on Hitler's side. But it was a lie maintained for half a century. As a German Scherfke was drafted into the Wehrmacht. The same way as almost quarter million the other Polish citizens. In the army Scherfke had saved a lot of lives: teammates and their families from the hands of the Gestapo or way to concentration camps. We've found Michael, the son of Fryderyk Scherfke. The whole truth about his father came to light while he’s 70 year old man. 30 years after his father's death. When Michel would ask his father about the old days, Fryderyk Scherfke never wanted to talk. He was afraid to ask again.Michael never visited his hometown, Poznan. We' are going to take this trip together with him. For the first time in 70 years Michael will go back to Poznan. We'll meet the people who possibly wouldn't be born without the helping hand of his father.
