Institute of Documentary Film’s Activities
Founded in 2001, the INSTITUTE OF DOCUMENTARY FILM (IDF) is a non-profit training and networking centre based in Prague, Czech Republic, focused on the support of East European documentary films and their wider promotion. Our activities support filmmakers through all stages of completion – development, funding, production, post-production, and distribution. We aim at individual filmmakers (tailored consultations), groups of carefully selected professionals with projects or films (Ex Oriente Film, East European Forum, East Silver, Doc Launch, etc.), broader professional community (East Doc Platform), as well as the general public (portal www.DOKweb.net). We closely work with key int. festivals, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, markets, or training initiatives and serve as the GATEWAY TO EAST EUROPEAN DOCUMENTARY FILM.

Sokmann Reet

Lunatics
Riho Hütt is astronomer and artist who gathers the cultural life of West-Virumaa around himself. Inciting farmers to paint and shoemakers to follow classics. Despite everything, he has reactivated the Art Gallery of Rakvere. It seems that in money-oriented Estonia there are still people who find inspiration in butterflies and starry heaven...

Cecilia
Arvo Pärt’s piece “Cecilia, Vergine Romana” was commissioned by the agency decreed by the Pope to be responsible for the preparation of the Holy Year in Rome. Our film captured the rehearsals for the piece in Rome, with composer Arvo Pärt, conductor Myung-Whum Chung, and presented by the Santa Cecilia Choir and Orchestra of the Academy of Rome.

Estonian Prison
Estonia, established in February 1918 – the Central Prison, or as the local people used to call it – the Battery – which was built in the former battery barracks in Tallinn. The Battery has been the detention place for both criminals and political prisoners throughout times. The history of the 20th century, both in Estonia and Europe, has been reflected in the memories of the people who were put into these dark places because of their ideological beliefs.

Your Name
Arvo Pärt’s piece “... which was the son of...” was commissioned for the concert tour of the European Cultural Capitols in 2000. Our film captures the Cultural Capitol youth choir Voices of Europe and their rehearsals in Reykjavik with conductor Thorgerdur Inngolfsdottir.

Yuri Vella's World
A documentary about Jüri Vella, a writer and social activist of the Forest Nenets, who lives in West-Siberia and who left his home village ten years ago to lead the life of a reindeer herder in the taiga. The little, unique world he created there was meant to offer protection from the degeneration caused by the alcoholism and unemployment that sadly poses a serious threat to the indigenous peoples of Siberia. To give his grandchildren a proper education in their natural environment, and to teach them reindeer herding skills, he established an elementary school in his winter camp. Unfortunately, Jüri Vella’s world is but an oasis of the traditional lifestyle within one of the largest oil-producing regions of Russia.
