Simo, the film-maker's father-in-law, was secret police chief under Tito in communist Yugoslavia's smallest republic. His mysterious life, premature murky death and unquestioned power made it inevitable for the film-maker to embark on a quest to discover this man he never knew and the nature of the Yugoslav utopia he believed in and was ready to sacrifice everything for.

Yugoslavia on the Couch
The psychotherapist’s couch voyages the entire length and breadth of former Yugoslavia. On the couch the widest variety of people (e.g., presidents, musicians, war criminals, comedians, farmers, schoolchildren) will be invited to share the couch with each other and grapple with the question of what made Yugoslavia succeed and then fail and why Yugoslavia self-destructed at the level of the psychological and emotional. The film also has exclusive access to the behind the scenes production of a drama series where psychotherapist Miki Manojlovic treats his five patients, traumatized by the events of the 1990s nightly for 10 weeks.

David Solomon spent the 1990s as a political conflict mediator and humanitarian negotiator in the Middle East and Balkan conflicts. He returned to pursue his original dream path as documentary filmmaker in 2004 when he moved to Belgrade where he lives today. He established a group of cinema verite filmmakers (Ateliers Varan Belgrade) with the support of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ateliers Varan Paris. Besides political mediation and conflict prevention, he has most recently been the Central and Eastern Europe tour manager for NDT, the Netherlands Dans Theater based in the Hague.
