The Nicobars are a small archipegalo in the Indian Ocean, where one of the last indigenous people lived almost like in a time capsule for 900 years. When the Tsunami struck them in 2004 not only a third of their population died but they were also thrown into a modern world through the wave of aid and relief organisations that arrived on their shores. This aftermath proved to be a bigger catastrophe for their culture than the Tsunami. Today the organisations are leaving and the money is spent. But the Nicobaris embark on the search for a new identity.
Apples of the Golan
The part of Israel and Syria where apple is the people’s bomb. Apples of the Golan is an epic story of a village turned prison full of rappers, rockers and regimes, salsa dancers, holy men and dead fish, traitors, lovers, freedom fighters and their heartbroken mothers, all set against the backdrop of the revolution raging in their homeland Syria, creeping through the orchards toward their homes in Israel. In 1967 Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria. Before the occupation there were 139 Arab villages in the region. Only five remain today. 130,000 Syrian Arabs were permanently forced out of their homes. This film tells a story of one of these villages, Majdal Shams, and its inhabitants' struggle for survival. They are too few to fight. The apples are the bombs with which they fight the occupation. Their trees root them to the land; they will not be moved. Israel is their home, Syria their homeland. Neither is paradise.

John Wallace was born in Wexford, Ireland in 1980. He graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from University College Dublin in 2000. After graduation John started work as assistant director on various feature films, commercials and television productions.His assistant directing credits include One Hundred Mornings, Eamon, Savage, Garage, Prosperity, Inside I’m Dancing, Laws of Attraction and Intermission. During this time he also produced six short films including the award winning Jellybaby (2005) and Runners (2009) both directed by Rob and Ronan Burke. In 2010 John produced the feature film Rewind directed by PJ Dillon and starring Amy Huberman (Best Actress IFTA’s 2011), which was released in Irish cinemas in March 2011.In 2012, John produced Kirsten Sheridan’s Dollhouse, which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, having received a Europa Cinemas Label Special Mention award and screened at the renowned SXSW festival. In 2012 he also produced Keith Walsh and Jill Beardsworth feature documentary Apples of the Golan.
