Institute of Documentary Film’s Activities
Founded in 2001, the INSTITUTE OF DOCUMENTARY FILM (IDF) is a non-profit training and networking centre based in Prague, Czech Republic, focused on the support of East European documentary films and their wider promotion. Our activities support filmmakers through all stages of completion – development, funding, production, post-production, and distribution. We aim at individual filmmakers (tailored consultations), groups of carefully selected professionals with projects or films (Ex Oriente Film, East European Forum, East Silver, Doc Launch, etc.), broader professional community (East Doc Platform), as well as the general public (portal www.DOKweb.net). We closely work with key int. festivals, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, markets, or training initiatives and serve as the GATEWAY TO EAST EUROPEAN DOCUMENTARY FILM.

Since 2002 we have produced and marketed award-winning creative documentaries for TV and cinema. We love films that dare to be different and pursue new and innovative ways of storytelling or that cross formal and structural borders. We love to laugh and we believe that documentary films may and must also entertain their audiences. Our main topics include social issues, human interest and human rights related issues, pop culture and the arts.

What are the ways the company gets involved? / Distributor, Executive Producer, Co-Producer, Sales Agent…. Will it be the same also the next year? Please explain if there are any changes planned:

World sales, getting involved as sales agents taking the films to all international markets and platforms. We sometimes get involved in theatrical and DVD releases, but rarely as Executive Producers and/or co-producers, this would be handled by our sister company Kloos & Co. Medien.

Documentary genre(s) preferred:

We rather think of good films than subjects. But we have a preference for geopolitics, social and human interest issues, ecology, music and arts.

Average number of titles annually acquired:

12-16.

Three recent titles from international companies. Please specify the countries or territories:

Ameer Got His Gun (Black Sheep, Israel), The Other Chelsea (Kloos & Co. Medien, Germany), Life In Stills (Heymann Brothers, Israel), Punk In Africa (Czech Republic/South Africa).

Third-party percentage:

N/A.

Cash advance / Guarantees:

Usually no.

Other platforms / VOD, mobile, podcasting, etc.:

Yes, absolutely.

Preference regarding the length and format (single/series):

We like feature-length films and are quite successful to take them to market. But, we strongly recommend and request producers to come up with a 52min. edit, thus increasing sales estimations.

What do you expect of the East Doc Platform?:

The best of Eastern European talents, learning about early-stage projects, following up on those that are in progress and signing the best of those well further advanced.
