The news section provides up-to-date information on upcoming and just completed films, interviews with filmmakers and other documentary professionals, in-depth articles exploring the state of documentary filmmaking in various parts of the region, as well as insightful texts on current trends, funding, etc. The portal also boasts the largest published databases of completed and upcoming documentary films from Eastern Europe, an industry directory, as well as trailers and original video content. www.DOKweb.net is IDF´s key online project that provides comprehensive details on all IDF´s activities and links them with general information service.

Founded in 2001, the INSTITUTE OF DOCUMENTARY FILM (IDF) is a non-profit training and networking centre based in Prague, Czech Republic, focused on the support of East European documentary films and their wider promotion. Our activities support filmmakers through all stages of completion – development, funding, production, post-production, and distribution. We aim at individual filmmakers (tailored consultations), groups of carefully selected professionals with projects or films (Ex Oriente Film, East European Forum, East Silver, Doc Launch, etc.), broader professional community (East Doc Platform), as well as the general public (portal www.DOKweb.net). We closely work with key int. festivals, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, markets, or training initiatives and serve as the GATEWAY TO EAST EUROPEAN DOCUMENTARY FILM.

After a closer look and a bit of exaggeration, one may get the impression that the Russian documentarian Pavel Kostomarov, originally a cinematographer, is by all means an experimentalist. His famous, emotionally charged and stylistically versatile documentaries surpass, to some extent, the framework of traditional filmmaking and incline towards non-stylized content. Driven by lyricism of an intimate drama that is captured as a pure observation, Kostomarov eventually arrived to a stage where he either systematically denies or highlights author’s presence. IDF invites East Doc Platform audiences to the director’s presentation of his latest in-development film titled Zip Cities which upgrades his creative methods even further, to the syntactic structure of reality. He employs camcorder as an eye that observes the world with an intrinsic dynamic and utters in its own language at the same time. Besides, it is universal and outreaches cultural limits: that’s why there are several world cities incorporated: Belin, New York, Tallin, Lyon or even Jihlava, the Czech Republic. Pavel Kostomarov’s unorthodox Master Class built around the exceptional project Zip Cities is open for public, all the East Doc Platform Open Accreditation and One World festival pass holders.

Kostomarov Pavel

Pavel Kostomarov

Pavel Kostomarov was born in 1975, Moscow. From 1992 to 1996, he studied engineering at the Institute of Biology in Moscow. In 2002 he graduated from the State Film Institute (VGIK) as a cinematographer. He has worked on a number of films as a cinematographer with directors Sergey Loznitsa, Victor Asliuk, Alexey Uchitel and Alexey Popogrebsky. Filmography (director): The Transformer (2003, Best Documentary at the Tampere ISFF); Life in Peace (2004, Silver Dove at DOK Leipzig, Silver Dragon for Best Documentary at the 45th Krakow FF); Mother (2007), all co-directed with Antoine Cattin; Two Together (2009); I Love You (2010, co-directed with Alexander Rastorguev).

Pavel Kostomarov is experimenting with the fabric of a movie. He calls this style Zip Movie. He travels to NY, Tallinn, Jihlava, Lyon, Berlin…."To make a long story short, it is a total hunting for the reality. Archiving the reality. Turn on/turn off - shots in all directions: shots of breathing in; shots of breathing out, shots of flickering, shots of flashes, shots of blinks.I would like to know if these letters and syllables will construct a sentence. If this alphabet full of energy is able to convey poetic vision of my universe. I call this experiment ZIP-MOVIE. ZIP-MOVIE is like this: SEE - FEEL - CATCH IT LIKE ONE CATCHES A BUTTERFLY with one movement of a net (Canon MarkII). Then put it into the pocket without stopping life which is so volatile and long, even longer than one shot."
