Institute of Documentary Film’s Activities
Founded in 2001, the INSTITUTE OF DOCUMENTARY FILM (IDF) is a non-profit training and networking centre based in Prague, Czech Republic, focused on the support of East European documentary films and their wider promotion. Our activities support filmmakers through all stages of completion – development, funding, production, post-production, and distribution. We aim at individual filmmakers (tailored consultations), groups of carefully selected professionals with projects or films (Ex Oriente Film, East European Forum, East Silver, Doc Launch, etc.), broader professional community (East Doc Platform), as well as the general public (portal www.DOKweb.net). We closely work with key int. festivals, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, markets, or training initiatives and serve as the GATEWAY TO EAST EUROPEAN DOCUMENTARY FILM.

Cleaning up: Industry Section Design Concept

Over the years, our collective body has been covered with, for instance, tight sci-fi suits (2005), kitsch trinkets (2007), recycled paper (2008) and soul-searching plastic (2009). After ten years since IDF's founding and since the first East European Forum, a general overhaul and a good scrubbing are apparently long overdue.

Our set designers Zdeněk and Tereza Durdil decided to centre this year's East European Forum around the concept of cleaning up. While some of the actual design features will be unveiled on the spot, they will no doubt involve a lot of water and a few common bathroom items.

The concept is also carried over to Zdeněk Durdil's remarkable industry jingle which will be introduced in a few weeks. Our slogan - We're starting! - should convey our determination not to give in to self-satisified inertia and to maintain flexibility and openness in order to serve documentary filmmakers and their projects as best as we can.

Graphic designer Juraj Horváth is the man behind this year's industry guide and other graphics for our printed materials. Scattered cotton swabs, dry soap bars, a pile of cosmetic pads with a drop of lotion - Juraj's tongue-in-cheek visuals with hints of yellow comment on the nature of cleanliness and hygiene which rests on repetition and resists perfecting.

We're starting anew with with every new batch of documentary projects and films. We're starting over after each edition of the industry section in Jihlava. We're starting up our integrated industry machine and look forward to seeing you in Jihlava.
