Ex Oriente Film Workshop – 1st Session: Find Your Way

The first session of the our training programme for creative documentaries deals with inspiration, focusing on the story and the protagonists, analyzing international aspects of the projects, and drafting the basic concept for production and funding.
Among the tutors confirmed for the first session are the following: Marijke Rawie – Expert consultant / Workshop moderator, The Netherlands; Mikael Opstrup – Lead production tutor of the workshop, producer and consultant, Denmark; Jean-Pierre Rehm – 1st session inspirational lead tutor, FIDMarseille director, France; Niels Pagh Andersen – Editor, Finland/Denmark; Lars Barthel – Director, cinematographer, Germany; Nick Ware – Producer, www.joiningthedocs.tv, UK; Guest director invited by Jean-Pierre Rehm; Miroslav Janek – Director, cinematographer, Czech Republic; Petr Koblovský – cinematographer, Czech Republic, and others.
Starting this year, the Ex Oriente Film workshop have a new system of lead inspirational tutors who will give direction to each session, stimulating programme and bringing inspiring guests and inputs. The lead inspirational tutor for the first session will be film theorist and FIDMarseille’s distinctive director Jean-Pierre Rehm who will, in addition to the regular workshop programme, have an opening lecture about the meaning of mainstream and current trends in documentary film. Mr Rehm will also introduce his surprise guest who will screen their film and meet the participants.
Apart from individual meetings, group sessions and film development lectures on storytelling and financing, the first part of the workshop will offer an inspirational session by Nick Ware about finding new ways to fund, create and distribute documentaries; an overview session on visual styles in documentary film by German cinematographer Lars Barthel; Niels Pagh Andersen, a remarkable editor from Denmark, will have a session on Dramaturgical Rules in Documentary Film, as well as dramaturgical consultations with all participants.
Participants and guests will also have an opportunity to see the collection of films developed under the Czech-German project Breathless – Dominance of the Moment, as well as the screening of “my favourite recent film” selected by Niels Pagh Andersen.
On the first day, March 23, participants will also have a chance to attend an in-depth case study of a former Ex Oriente Film project that will include excerpts from the rough cut and the completed film, a survey of all the production stages, and an insightful outline of the entire film production process.
The first 2010 session will take place in the small town of Roztoky, 10 km from Prague, with excellent train and bus connection to Prague and to the airport.
