The news section provides up-to-date information on upcoming and just completed films, interviews with filmmakers and other documentary professionals, in-depth articles exploring the state of documentary filmmaking in various parts of the region, as well as insightful texts on current trends, funding, etc. The portal also boasts the largest published databases of completed and upcoming documentary films from Eastern Europe, an industry directory, as well as trailers and original video content. is IDF´s key online project that provides comprehensive details on all IDF´s activities and links them with general information service.

Founded in 2001, INSTITUTE OF DOCUMENTARY FILM (IDF) is a non-profit training and networking centre based in Prague, Czech Republic, focused on the support of Central and East European creative documentary film and its wider promotion.

We work closely with Central and East European film directors and producers and provide in-depth development support for their projects as well as international promotion.

We also work with key international festivals, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, markets, film institutions, film schools, MEDIA Desks, training programmes, national film centres and various film portals, and serve as the GATEWAY TO EAST EUROPEAN DOCUMENTARY FILM – an indispensable source of documentary projects and films from Central and Eastern Europe.

Christina Burnett works as a producer with Wide Eye Pictures and as a trainer and change management consultant in the film and TV industry in the UK and continental Europe.  She has taught workshops for professional producers in England, Russia, Belgium, Germany, The Netherlands, Wales, Denmark and Estonia, for organizations including the Media Business School, Audiovisual Eureka, the European Documentary Network and Media Desks in several countries. 
Since 2000 Christina has been pitch trainer at the Amsterdam FORUM for International Co-financing of Documentaries, the largest annual gathering of commissioning editors and independent documentary producers in Europe. She also designs career strategy and development courses for the European Film College in Denmark, where she was joint course director of the international pitching workshops East Meets West and Docs Without Frontiers.
Originally a theatre director, for the past 17 years Christina Burnett has worked in film and television on projects ranging from the feature film LAMB to the controversial documentary on the New York sex industry, HOOKERS, HUSTLERS, PIMPS AND THEIR JOHNS which was nominated for an International Emmy Award, and ORDINARY PEOPLE, a 6 part series about why women become feminists.  Wide Eye Pictures, of which Christina is a director, was set up in 1996 and specialises in creative documentaries. 
Two of the films Christina produced for the company, WAR CRIES: PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (Channel 4 – UK/ SBS - Australia) and CAROL AND NANCY (BBC2, UK) have been nominated for the UK Commission for Racial Equality Factual Television Media Awards. 
 As a consultant, Christina Burnett is a Specialist Advisor in Production for SKILLSET, the National Training Organisation for Broadcast, Film, Video and Multimedia in the UK, as well as being an approved consultant for the Development and Training Services section of the British Council.  She is an NVQ assessor in Production, and regularly runs pitching and presentation seminars for PACT, the professional trade body for UK independent production companies. 
Christina also has wide experience as a script and project assessor for organisations including the European Script Fund (now the MEDIA Plus Development Programme of the European Union), Lumiere, the Royal Court Theatre and the Arts Council of Great Britain.

Paul Pauwels is producer and founder of independent production company Periscope Production. He studied direction and production at RITCS film school in Brussels and then worked as production director in the field of dramatic films. In 1987 he founded Periscope Productions, which focuses on advertising, documentaries and short dramatic films. He is also the vice-president of the Flemish Film Institute.

Born in Johannesburg (South Africa) in 1955, he studies Architecture in Turin - Italy.
In 1985 he founds, with others, STEFILM working as a director and producer.

Sabine Bubeck-Paaz, born in 1961, studies German and French literature and linguistics in Tübingen, works as a journalist free lance for German newspapers. In 1990 she starts working as a commissioning editor at the ZDF youth and children's department in Mainz. With the start of ARTE, the European Culture Channel in 1991, she becomes member of the ZDF department "Das kleine Fernsehspiel" in order to create programs for ARTE. Since 2000, in the department "ARTE Theme evenings”, she is responsible for the development and production of thematic evenings (the themes: from "Wolves", over "Streetfashion", and "Digital Spirit" to "Seduction", "Fidelity", "Pain" and "Cancer", "The art of healing", "The skin", "Brain", "Jiddische Mamme", "Life with prison".).
The pole ARTE Deutchland is the coordinator of the German part of programs for ARTE. The German companies from ARTE Deutchland are ZDF and 10 ARD regional as well as Degeto, which are all under an obligation to deliver approx. 850 hours of programming a year to ARTE. The obligations are shared as fellows: ZDF: 50% and ARD 50% (WDR 11%, NDR 8.13%, BR 7.25%, MDR 5.25%, SWR 8.38%, HR 3.5%, ORB 1.25%, RB 1.25%, SR  1.25%, SFB 2.75%). About 70% of the programs are first broadcast on ARTE. ARTE has six-month exclusive license. The channels buy, produce and co-produce documentaries for ARTE. Normally the development of project begins by contacting a coordinator or commissioning editor from ARTE/ZDF. When a channel accepts a project, the coordinator makes an official proposal via ARTE Deutchland to the Conference of program in Strasbourg.  Total annual hours of documentaries delivered by ARTE Deutchland: 240 in documentary strands plus approx. 120 hours within theme evenings.

Leena Pasanen was originally a journalist and reporter and for many years worked for the Finnish Press Agency. In 1999 she became the head of the documentary section at Finnish public television YLE. Currently she is a producer of the culture, science and education channel YLE Teema.
YLE Teema
YLE Teema is Finland’s first digital channel, and focuses mainly on culture, science and education. The scope of its programs includes both documentaries and dramatic or animated films, including various magazines and portraits. YLE offers a wide range of themes, from history to art, literature, music, dance and opera. The aim of YLE is to offer its audiences both indelible experiences and food for thought.
YLE Teema has a special broadcasting time for documentaries concerned with globalization and Third World countries. It is one of the few European stations to feature two exclusively documentary sections. The length or format of the film is not limited in those sections.

Philippe Van Meerbeck is a Commissioning Editor at VRT (Vlaamse Radio & Televisie - Flemish TV) in Brussels, Belgium. He studied Social Communication at the HRITCS-film school in Brussels and started in 1980 as a scientific collaborator for the award winning historical TV-series 'De Nieuwe Orde’ (The New Order) and 'De Kollaboratie' (The Collaboration). Philippe co-wrote the critical acclaimed series ‘De Tijd der Vergelding’ (Time of Reprisal) and ‘De Oostfronters’ (The Eastern Front) and wrote & edited the series ‘In Ballingschap (In Exile) and ‘Na September 44’ (After September 44).  From 1990 to 2000, Philippe made more than 50 feature programs about history for VRT-series like  ‘Boulevard’ and ‘Histories’, a number of which were nominated & won awards (Prix Stendhal, Prix URTI). In July 2001 Philippe became Head of Documentaries and is in charge of three primetime and two late evening documentary slots on VRT-Canvas, the second public TV-channel in Flanders, Belgium.
Vlaamse Radio – en Televisieomroep  is Belgium’s Dutch – language public broadcaster of the Flemish community in Belgium. VRT consists of the family entertainment channel TV1, the young channel Ketnet and Canvas, which is an informative and cultural channel with a large documentary profile.

CEES VAN EDE – NPS The Netherlands

After a training at the Dutch Film Academy and three years of writing filmreviews for De Volkskrant, Cees van Ede has been working for Dutch television since 1976 as the editor and presenter of various film features: Cinevisie, Cinemagazine and Cinema 3. He made a five-part series on the history of Dutch cinema, another eight-part series on actors and acting and some twenty specials about stage and filmdirectors.
Since 1995, he is the editor of Het Uur van de Wolf (The Hour of the Wolf), a weekly NPS-tv programme that presents documentaries on arts and culture. (Each year a Silver WolfAward is given to the best short documentary (60’ max.), at the International Documentary Filmfestival Amsterdam). As head of the documentary department at NPS-tv, he is involved in the development and production of documentaries with a wide variety of subject matter (politics, culture, history, etc.).   
NPS is one of the 9 big public broadcasting corporations, who -together with 6 smaller ones-
broadcast on three different channels. Apart from those there are 9 commercial channels in The Netherlands.
NPS is financed by licence fees and advertising. It is a public service association with some legal obligations controlled by the Media Act of the government.
NPS transmits on Nederland 3 with a total of 800 annual hours.
Roughly 15 % of the airtime is devoted to documentaries in a wide variety: current affairs, political, cultural and creative documentaries.

For nearly nine years Franz Grabner was responsible for religious documentaries and the thematic evening "Kreuz&Quer/"Criss-cross". In that time he also realized a new format for ORF  -"Die BOX" and had been successful with a number of international coproduction as executive producer (z.B. 2002 Golden Gate Award for "Stalin - Red God"). Since Mai 2003 Franz Grabner is head of documentaries for art and culture for ORF.
Before 1994 he was managing two galleries of Contemporary and organizing numerous cultural events and film festivals.
ORF is an independent public service broadcasting corporation. It has two national TV channels: ORF 1 and ORF 2 plus four national and nine regional radio channels, all financed by license fees and advertising. The TV channels are complementary and are both transmitted by terrestrial network as well as satellite in collaboration with 3sat.

CT is public service broadcaster that operates on two national terrestrial channels CT1 and CT 2. Documentaries are mainly in-house productions and acquisitions. Approx. 60 hours a year is commissioned/co-produced with domestic or international producers. International co-productions CT realized mostly on the field of fiction programs, but in very last time it was discussed to produce some documentary programs in co – production with foreign broadcasters or producers.
