Ex Oriente Film
2nd session: “Production & Story Development”
Venue: Jihlava IDFF (Jihlava, Czech Republic)
Dates of the session: 2nd Workshop – October 22 – 28, 2012
Participants: Directors and producers of 12 - 14 projects selected that particular year
Session Focus:
The second workshop session focuses on budgeting, legal aspects of co-productions, strategies for selecting commissioning editors and the proper television format, as well as a deeper creative development of the projects, the rough material as well as the documentary script. The second session is specific in that it has a partly separate programme for directors and producers. It also puts a strong emphasis on the development of the projects distribution strategy.
Detailed Description:
The main theme of the second session is financing and international market access, including financial plans and budgeting. The development of the story and protagonists continues. Directors and producers take part in separate parallel sessions during which they improve different aspects of their project – directors should clarify the story and protagonists and strengthen the international dimension of the story, while producers should prepare their individual plans for film financing and consult their detailed budgets and funding sources (TV and non-TV funding overview).
Specific parts of the second session programme for directors: “One Day (Story) Editing Session: and “One Day Trailer Session”, reediting and creating the project trailer. And for producers: “One Day of Legal Aspects” during which participants attend theoretical lectures to better understand international co-production and its legal aspects.
“One Day Production Tour of Europe”, here participants receive an overview of financial sources for creative documentary films in Europe and worldwide, as well as strategies for the selection of appropriate commissioning editors and the proper television format. Participants are provided with the following information during a one-day session—who is who in Europe — the most important markets, festivals, broadcasters, and where to find opportunities for East European production —pre-sales, sales and co-production contracts.
“Half-day Session on the Functioning of an Independent Production Company” – Producers are provided with important information about how to run a production company within the East European region, including detailed case studies. Participants-producers develop detailed financing strategies, define a potential market for their films, collect key contacts for potential broadcasters and co-producers, and begin working on the professionally prepared “film pack” and trailer.
