www.DOKweb.net is a portal dedicated to East European documentary film. The news section provides up-to-date information on upcoming and just completed films, interviews with filmmakers and other documentary professionals, in-depth articles exploring the state of documentary filmmaking in various parts of the region, as well as insightful texts on current trends, funding, etc. The portal also boasts the largest published databases of completed and upcoming documentary films from Eastern Europe, an industry directory, as well as trailers and original video content. www.DOKweb.net is IDF´s key online project that provides comprehensive details on all IDF´s activities and links them with general information service.
Institute of Documentary Film’s Activities
Founded in 2001, the INSTITUTE OF DOCUMENTARY FILM (IDF) is a non-profit training and networking centre based in Prague, Czech Republic, focused on the support of East European documentary films and their wider promotion. Our activities support filmmakers through all stages of completion – development, funding, production, post-production, and distribution. We aim at individual filmmakers (tailored consultations), groups of carefully selected professionals with projects or films (Ex Oriente Film, East European Forum, East Silver, Doc Launch, etc.), broader professional community (East Doc Platform), as well as the general public (portal www.DOKweb.net). We closely work with key int. festivals, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, markets, or training initiatives and serve as the GATEWAY TO EAST EUROPEAN DOCUMENTARY FILM.

A filled-out online application form, hard copies of required documents and DVD copies must be sent by April 20, 2012  (postmark deadline) to:

Conditions of Participation:
Directors and producers participate with their own creative documentary projects. It is required that all workshop sessions be attended by both the director and the producer. Participants must be proficient in English. The Ex Oriente Film workshop is designed primarily for Central and East European creative documentary projects dealing with East European stories, and for directors and producers from Central and Eastern Europe. However, we may accept up to one-third (4 out of 14 projects) of participants/projects from Western Europe.

 

Project Selection:
Projects will be assessed by a five-member committee made up of IDF staff and international experts. Preference will be given to East European proposals and directors/producers based in Eastern Europe.
Individual meetings with selected applicants are part of the selection process. 
These interviews will be held in three East European capitals with the representatives of IDF and lead tutors. The exact dates and venues of individual meetings will be announced in May, 2012 at www.dokweb.net.



Applicants invited to an individual meeting must bring visual materials relevant to the project, and samples of previous work.

Timetable of the 2012 Ex Oriente Film Workshop:
First Session – June 18 - 23, 2012 (Czech Republic, TBC)
Second Session – October 22 - 28, 2012 (probable dates, Jihlava, Czech Republic)
Third Session – March 2013 (Prague, Czech Republic)

Participation Fee:
Participation fee is EUR 1,500 per selected project (includes all accommodation, coffee breaks and lunches for 1 - 2 persons during the three workshop sessions).

 

Successful applicants whose projects are selected have to pay the participation fee. Projects that fail to pay the fee will be excluded from participation at the workshop. Participation fee is EUR 1,500 per project for accommodation, coffee breaks and one meal per day. Travel expenses are paid by the participants. The total amount of EUR 1,500 must be transferred to CSOB,  Na Prikope 854/14 Praha 1, Czech RepublicAccount Holder:  Institut dokumentarniho filmu (IDF), Account Number: 175037091/0300, IBAN: CZ96 0300 0000 0001 7503 7091, SWIFT: CEKOCZPP.  Please specify the project title in the transfer details. 
Note: Any bank fees relating to the money transfer will be paid by the applicant.

 

Application Step-by-step
Before you start filling out the application form, please make sure you are able to provide all required materials (logline and synopsis; treatment; budget and financial plan in separate MS Word and Excel files; film stills; photos of director and producer).

B. HARD COPY APPLICATION SENT BY REGULAR MAIL
Print out the confirmation code generated on the last page of the online application form and attach the code to the application sent by regular mail. Each application must include the following:  
1) Generated confirmation code, project title, name of director, producer and production company 
2) Application form in 5 copies (main details about the director, producer, production company and the project), project in 5 copies (apart from application form max. 6 pages of project, including logline and synopsis, treatment, budget, financial plan, motivation letter, producer’s CV, director’s CV and stills)
3) 5 x DVD copy with the project trailer
4) 5 x DVD copy with a previous film of the director

Before you fill out the application and send your project, please go through our checklist:

1) The project specifies the main storyline and gives a strong sense of what the future film will be like.
2) The project has an actual topic and it is not merely a description of the story and protagonists.
3) The project has an overlap, i.e., the local subject is tied in with the universal. 
4) A logline (a one-sentence description) is included at the beginning of the project.
5) Any film titles that might appear in the CV’s have been translated into English.
6) The project includes pictures that relate to the story, its environment and protagonists.
7) The project includes contact details for the director and the producer.
8) The project includes a budget draft.
9) The project is max. 6 pages long.
