Ex Oriente Film EditLab
Venue: Prague
Participants: directors and their editors of approx. 5 projects selected from former Ex oriente Film participants
Dates of the session: May 2013
Session Focus:
The Ex Oriente Film EditLab is a four-day session taking place in Prague – it focuses on the support of the projects that in the past attended the Ex Oriente Film and now reached the rough cut stage. The workshop programe develops both film material and story editing.
Detailed description:
The Ex Oriente Film EditLab consists of case studies and screenings of successful Ex Oriente Film films. Our main intention is to examine the outcome of professionally developed projects (“film pack” and trailer) by asking, “What is the result of our work?” in combination with an outlined strategy for its distribution in the European market. The second part of the programme includes the screening of rough cuts with the intention of offering some inspirational input to the filmmakers when finalizing their films. It also offers actual editing work on the rough cuts during which the directors with their editors shape and tune their rough cuts and aim for the final cuts.
This intensive session addresses current challenges in post-production work and support creative risk-taking around issues of story, dramatic structure, and character development. Participants meet with recognized editors and directors to work on the story development and rough cuts. It is designed for films from all the editions of the Ex Oriente Film workshop.
In 2011 before the second EOF EditLab, we extended the session and focus on editing analysis and distribution strategies by involving top class editing tutors and by inviting festivals selectors and sales agents (distributors) directly to the workshop.
In 2011 we also established cooperation with prestigious US editors, top end professionals who regularly cooperate with the Sundance Institute Documentary Film Edit and Story Lab. Our aim is to foster an exchange of ideas with colleagues from the Sundance Institute.
The Ex Oriente Film EditLab helps the participants with:
- final shape of the distribution strategy with key world sales agent
- fine-tuning of the rough cut, leading to the final cut with establsihed international editors
