www.DOKweb.net is a portal dedicated to East European documentary film. The news section provides up-to-date information on upcoming and just completed films, interviews with filmmakers and other documentary professionals, in-depth articles exploring the state of documentary filmmaking in various parts of the region, as well as insightful texts on current trends, funding, etc. The portal also boasts the largest published databases of completed and upcoming documentary films from Eastern Europe, an industry directory, as well as trailers and original video content. www.DOKweb.net is IDF´s key online project that provides comprehensive details on all IDF´s activities and links them with general information service.
Institute of Documentary Film’s Activities
Founded in 2001, the INSTITUTE OF DOCUMENTARY FILM (IDF) is a non-profit training and networking centre based in Prague, Czech Republic, focused on the support of East European documentary films and their wider promotion. Our activities support filmmakers through all stages of completion – development, funding, production, post-production, and distribution. We aim at individual filmmakers (tailored consultations), groups of carefully selected professionals with projects or films (Ex Oriente Film, East European Forum, East Silver, Doc Launch, etc.), broader professional community (East Doc Platform), as well as the general public (portal www.DOKweb.net). We closely work with key int. festivals, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, markets, or training initiatives and serve as the GATEWAY TO EAST EUROPEAN DOCUMENTARY FILM.

Wrap-up: Ex Oriente Film Babies

The five-day editing workshop Ex Oriente Film Babies (February 5 - 9, 2011) ended on Wednesday. The filmmakers left loaded with new perspectives and advice from the tutors who praised high quality of the projects. The intensive session included a lot of editing work, a few seminars and lectures, and a screening of films by Andreas Horvath. Get a flavour of the event in our photo gallery.

Ex Oriente Film Babies, the fourth session of the Ex Oriente Film workshop, consists of rough-cut analysis, meetings, case studies and screenings of successful Ex Oriente Film documentaries. The programme focuses on editing analysis and distribution strategy by involving top class editing tutors and sales agents / distributors.


On Saturday, Feb 5, participants summed up the developments and difficulties surrounding their documentary projects... Many facets of life in a small Polish towncontemporary issues in the former Soviet bloc; a mad professor and his mesmerized wives; three women and a pack of desperate dogs; middle-aged men who believe they are pirates; an old wrestler refusing to quit...

On Sunday, Feb 6, meetings over the projects continued. In the evening, Austrian filmmaker Andreas Horvath presented his two documentary films Views of a Retired Night Porter (2006), The Passion According to the Polish Community of Pruchnik (2010) + From a Night Porter's Point of View (dir. Krzysztof Kieslowski, 1977).  





On Monday, Feb 7, tutors Peter Symes (UK), Tonička Janková (Czech Republic), and Stan Neumann (France) offered their takes on the intricacies of editing, dramatic structure and the requirements of different formats and markets. In the evening, Zdeněk Blaha of East Silver introduced a screening of At the Edge of Russia, a successful documentary film that received the 2010 Silver Eye Award and attended Ex Oriente Film 2006.



 

On Tuesday, Feb 8, Stefan Kloos of Kloos & Co. Medien GmbH and Rise and Shine world sales, and Ayse Poffet from First Hand Film introduced their companies and discussed the situation in the documentary market today.



On Wednesday, Feb 9, participants played clips from their projects and we wrapped up the whole workshop with final comments from the tutors... A big thanks to all participants, tutors and guests!
