Institute of Documentary Film’s Activities

Founded in 2001, INSTITUTE OF DOCUMENTARY FILM (IDF) is a non-profit training and networking centre based in Prague, Czech Republic, focused on the support of Central and East European creative documentary film and its wider promotion.

We work closely with Central and East European film directors and producers and provide in-depth development support for their projects as well as international promotion.

We also work with key international festivals, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, markets, film institutions, film schools, MEDIA Desks, training programmes, national film centres and various film portals, and serve as the GATEWAY TO EAST EUROPEAN DOCUMENTARY FILM – an indispensable source of documentary projects and films from Central and Eastern Europe.

IDF Introduces East Doc Platform - New Umbrella Event for Film Professionals

The Institute of Documentary Film (IDF) has scaled up its activities in recent years, which has opened up space for broader cooperation with major Czech documentary festivals. In March 2012, IDF introduces the new industry event East Doc Platform at the One World International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival.

Taking place March 5 - 11, 2012, the East Doc Platform hosts our staple events, such as the East European Forum, Doc Launch presentation, Project Market, and the East Silver video library with fresh spring documentary offerings. The second session of IDF's yearlong Ex Oriente Film that supports the development of creative documentaries, and the East Silver Market with its representative selection of the latest East European documentary films will take place at the Jihlava IDFF. At both festivals, IDF substantially contributes to the industry programmes that, in the European context, foster the making and distribution of documentary films.

The Institute of Documentary Film has been supporting documentary film in Central and Eastern Europe for eleven years. Our activities have helped to complete over 100 documentary films, many of which received prestigious awards at international festivals, and secured distribution for more than 800 documentaries.

The new East Doc Platform organized at One World focuses on the support of East European documentary films in all stages of completion. Taking place March 5 - 11, 2012, the Platform will include our regular events - East European Forum for projects in the production stage; Doc Launch presentation for projects in post-production; East Silver's video library with the latest docs from all of Eastern Europe, one-on-one meetings at the Project Market, and a slate of case studies and lectures on contemporary documentary trends, as well as master classes with renowned filmmakers. The East Doc Platform connects promising East European projects and films with European and North American commissioning editors, buyers, festival programmers, distributors, sales agents, film fund and organization representatives.

"We value our cooperation with IDF and we believe that by extending the activities of One World to include the East Doc Platform, we will be involved in shaping one of the most important industry events in the field of documentary film. One World is the largest human rights film festival in the world and, over the fourteen years of its existence, it has established itself as an influential event in the international festival landscape thanks to its original programming and many additional activities. With an attendance of over one hundred thousand, One World is among the key cultural events in the Czech Republic. I am delighted that the slate of our regular activities, such as One World in Regions (in addition to Prague, the festival takes place in 39 Czech towns); One World in Schools (a diverse programme for children and students); Get Your Audience! (an alternative way to distribute documentary films); Right to Know (year-round documentary screenings and debates); History, Film and Human Rights (use of documentary films at Czech universities); One World assistance around the world (guidance in setting up and organizing human rights film festivals around the world), and One World Social Innovation (a new media project), will now include another integral section - the East Doc Platform for film professionals. With its wealth of experience, IDF is a truly valuable partner to us."
Hana Kulhánková, director of the One World International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival

"Since the 5th Jihlava IDFF
, our festival has been welcoming the industry section as a natural part of its identity. Activities that support the making and distribution of documentary films are today among the crucial purposes for documentary festivals anywhere in the world. We are proud that the Jihlava IDFF is a Czech festival that has been providing the most comprehensive and very effective support to film professionals. We will maintain or extend these activities even as a part of IDF's programme moves to the spring season. We'll use the new space to develop the Inspiration Forum and other traditional festival projects, and to build new ones that will stimulate documentary film on the local and international levels. The core of the East Silver Market will remain at the Jihlava IDFF and we believe that its cooperation with One World can bring fresh impetus for its development. We are convinced that thanks to both festivals that complement one another in dates and programming, Czech audiences and filmmakers have a unique access to the best international film has to offer." Marek Hovorka, director of the Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival

"After eleven years of developing our activities, we are glad to have found a new opportunity to take their development to a new level. The East Doc Platform will capitalize on the long-term credit and results of activities organized by the Institute of Documentary Film in Jihlava. We believe that the new impulses, professionalism, experience and audience success of One World will enrich and intensify support for the creation and distribution of East European documentary films in Prague. Since we continue our cooperation with the Jihlava IDFF through the East Silver Market and Ex Oriente Film, we will stay close to the festival's inspiring programming and unique atmosphere. We believe that the original issue of too many international industry events taking place in October and November, which is resolved by our move to Prague in March dates, will after all lead to more stable and broader support for documentary professionals, and to a more intense cooperation between the Institute of Documentary Film and both festivals."
Viera Hladišová, director of the Institute of Documentary Film

The East Doc Platform opens to all documentary professionals March 5 - 11, 2012. One World takes place March 6 - 15, 2012, and the Jihlava IDFF runs October 23 - 28, 2012.
