Fortress

Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic. Imagine a space where the time has frozen. The time's stopped and life's been stuck in a shape resembling the era of Soviet Union. Somehow, people got used to the reign of the secret police and the fear of being spied on. Soviet-style propaganda of the authoritative, power-based regime of the president Igor Smirnov turns most of the PMR residents into simple workmen, without any will to understand how unbearable their situation is. Smirnov has been leading this non-existing country for as long as twenty years. The film focuses on a couple of characters being stuck in this geo-political gap, in between the European Union and Russia, in between the present and the past, crime and decency, decadence and hope for change. Framed by the time of presidential election, the film analyzes the organization of “no-state” and the rules of a regular life within.

The King

Towards the end of this unusual life story, we shall get a clearer understanding of where Darko's strength and incredible love for life comes from...

Children of Flamenco

If you know flamenco mainly as a passionate Spanish dance, this documentary will introduce you to the genre from a different and original angle. Amós and Abraham are two twelve year old boys celebrated as child prodigies of the flamenco scene today. While the sui generis guitarist Amós performs around the world, composes his own music and is praised by such famous guitarists as Paco de Lucía and Tomatito, the spontaneous and charismatic Abraham is inculcated the rich tradition of flamenco singing in his family and Caño-Roto (“Broken Plumbing”) neighborhood, where he grows up on the periphery of Madrid. This film provides an authentic excursion into the world of flamenco music and the fascinating music culture of Spanish Gypsies (Gitanos). The documentary also tells an intimate story of two different paths to acquiring virtuosity and of the passing of music and life philosophy from father to son.

Private Olympics

Private Olympics depicts the swan song of a once hopeful career. As an Olympic sport, grass skiing has never been popular with the media; however, to Jan Nemec - the best grass skier of all time - the sport has become a life's mission. At the age of 33, with no clear idea of his future, he decided to fulfill his destiny - literally - elsewhere. His best hope lies in renting himself out as a winter sports representative to countries trying to establish themselves in skiing, and leaving his own medals to gather dust at home. Private Olympics is a highly visual meditation on the limits of human ambitions and the human investment that can even lead to victory.

Albert Cinema

For decades homeless, for 5 years filmmakers. A story about men who try to change their lives. Step by step. Frame by frame. It all started 5 years ago, when a group of homeless men living in the Brother Albert’s shelter began to shoot films, in which they are the actors, scriptwriters, directors and cameramen. Their films have official premieres in cinemas. For homeless filmmakers these meetings with their audience are more important than Oscar ceremonies. Very often they invite their long gone families and sometimes… miracles happen.

Pygmies - Children of the Jungle

Adventurer Ivan Bulík has been all over Africa. He still had one dream left to fulfill: he wanted to record the life and customs of the smallest people of the planet; to find Pygmies unspoiled by civilization. He starts his search in the Central African Republic and the natives lead him across the borders of war-torn Congo. On his adventurous journey he is threatened by jungle elephants and gorillas. Finally, in the depths of the jungle, he discovers a tribe of natural Pygmies who have been living by gathering and hunting for thousands of years and whose joy of life, music, and dance seems without end. They truly are the naked children of the jungle, endangered by civilization and also by one of the biggest wars since WWII.

The Palace

The Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw was a despised gift from Stalin. After the political system transformation in Poland some suggested to pull it down. But the palace is still standing and doing fine, pulsating with the life of hundreds of offices, hosting a theatre, concert hall, cinema and even a swimming pool and city council room. Having already visited a clinic, hospital and registry office, this time Wolski takes his camera into the building that is a reflection of Poland’s everyday life and history. The nooks and crannies of the building make a backdrop to apt and witty observations as well as an inspiration to more general diagnoses.

Reception

One building, many young, „unique” people. They are sending strange rituals away in dimly lit corridors of one stately istitution. They are waiting for their five minutes. These five minutes can change their lives. Who are they and what are they doing here?
