The news section provides up-to-date information on upcoming and just completed films, interviews with filmmakers and other documentary professionals, in-depth articles exploring the state of documentary filmmaking in various parts of the region, as well as insightful texts on current trends, funding, etc. The portal also boasts the largest published databases of completed and upcoming documentary films from Eastern Europe, an industry directory, as well as trailers and original video content. www.DOKweb.net is IDF´s key online project that provides comprehensive details on all IDF´s activities and links them with general information service.
Institute of Documentary Film’s Activities
Founded in 2001, the INSTITUTE OF DOCUMENTARY FILM (IDF) is a non-profit training and networking centre based in Prague, Czech Republic, focused on the support of East European documentary films and their wider promotion. Our activities support filmmakers through all stages of completion – development, funding, production, post-production, and distribution. We aim at individual filmmakers (tailored consultations), groups of carefully selected professionals with projects or films (Ex Oriente Film, East European Forum, East Silver, Doc Launch, etc.), broader professional community (East Doc Platform), as well as the general public (portal www.DOKweb.net). We closely work with key int. festivals, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, markets, or training initiatives and serve as the GATEWAY TO EAST EUROPEAN DOCUMENTARY FILM.

Landscape of Destiny

Documentary by Pavel Kolaja dedicated to Ivan Vyskočil is the author's original testimony about the essence of dialogical proceedings, and at the same time his portrait. This exceptional visual poem was shot during the course of several years. The creators succeeded in penetrating not only the substance of Vyskočil's works and pedagogical methods, but also in revealing the source of his general creative attitude to life. They captured cheerfulness, inventiveness and free-mindedness, which have been accompanying this personality all life. Shooting this documentary, the director Pavel Kolaja found inspiration in Vyskočil's works as well as in his own experience as a student in his classes.

Family Instinct

"Family Instinct" is a film about incest - an illegal act, social taboo and a violation of religious norms. Zanda is a 28-year-old woman, worn out by hard work. Surrounded by poverty and despair, she is trying to survive with her two children in a god-forsaken Latvian village. Her hardships can be traced back to living in a relationship with her brother Valdis. When Valdis is put in jail, the local community forces her to make a difficult choice: to stay with him or with her children. Despite her ill fortune, she manages to express her love for the children, still hoping to save her family. The film offers a tragicomic but highly authentic insight into the bleak reality of Latvian countryside today.

Matchmaking Mayor

A situational documentary film about a village mayor trying to match local people in their thirties who are still single. Slowly but surely, the Slovak village Zemplínské Hámre is dying out. Its mayor, a retired general, doesn't want to give up though. Fighting the thirty-year-olds' loneliness, he has used various means such as offering a financial reward for each newborn child or encouraging people to make children in the local public address system. None of it has worked. However, the mayor has a new plan. He decides to organize a dating party for singles from all the neighbouring villages. Will the protagonists finally find their partners? In its theme and approach, the film represents a continuation of Erika Hníková's previous successful films "The Beauty Exchange" and "I Guess We'll Meet at the Eurocamp". The film was awarded in Berlinale IFF 2011.

Nyarma

Film is about everyday life of reindeer-breeders in polar Ural mountain region of Russia. Protagonist of the film is 17 years old farmer Gosha, who owns in his comparatively little age rather big deer farm. It's a film-portrait, film-destiny of the human and the silent melody of a mankind.

The Mosquito Problem and Other Stories

A small town on the Danube and its hopeful citizens are about to embark on a bright new journey. Massive rusty cranes, foreign investors, and the joyful chants of cheerleaders carry the dream of a great nuclear future. Disturbed only by gigantic stinging mosquitoes and unhumbled by greenpeace protests, the townsfolk celebrate the atomic hurray by engraving the nuclear power plant logo on buildings and soup bowls. Amidst the apparent atomic prosperity, lies a past that no one wants to remember. An island holding terrifying secrets. A Labor Camp. Stories of shocking and horrible crimes loom on the city just like the dark clouds of mosquitoes descending on its citizens. A world instantly transformed by ideologies, regimes and dreams of economic prosperity. The tales of characters whose lives intersect in a sinister past, nuclear future and the stinging mosquitoes flying through time, sealing their fate together.

David Wants to Fly (David Sieveking, 2009)

In search of enlightenement young David follows his idol David Lynch and uncovers the billion-dollar industry behind Transcendental Meditation. A sprightly docu about finding own artistic inspiration, both tongue-in-cheek and seriously questioning the Transcendental Meditation financial empire.

CERN

This film is about the Largest Hadron Collider in the world (LHC) which is located near the French - Swiss border. By means of the accelerator, the scientists want to simulate the situation shortly after the Big Bang. As a result, they hope to acquire basic information about the structure of mass and reveal the last secrets of the universe. Our observational documentary deals with several serious questions, such as the introduction of the CERN institution, explanation of the experiments and their expected results as well as the introduction of the technological complexity of the project. Last but not least, the possible risks of the human hybris are discussed.

Country of Dreams

The Vietnamese community in the Czech Republic is now in a very difficult situation.The majority of economic immigrants come to the Czech Republic already withhuge debts for intermediation their journey and extreme expectations as well aswithout any knowledge of local language, environment and the Czech law. All abovementioned often leads to higher vulnerability of these people from the trade withpeople and exploitation point of view apart from the fact that many of them arethus more or less involuntary put on the verge of the law. The film gives a reportabout a very oppressive and often even a situation of a personal tragedy of someof them and adds knowledgeable comments from local Vietnamese settlers and competent people, who are on behalf of the Czech Republic in charge of immigrants.

Banana Kids

The main theme is based on comparisons of life stories of several child heroes, or several Vietnamese families settled in the Czech Republic. Whereas the adults spend most of their time working, speak badly Czech and feel homesick, their kids learn Czech at school, become accustomed to Czech environment more quickly, speak Czech better than Vietnamese and have only a weak relation to their country. Vietnamese kids then begin a common part of children collective in the Czech Republic. In general the film mainly shows a life of people from two very different cultures and the pace of assimilation processes with an emphasis on expressing the differences in traditional ways of family common life and comparing value scales.

59/184/84

"59/184/84" is a film dating ad of a permanently unhappy man waiting for life to start. Living an empty life of a loner, he nurtures the idea that something must happen; that destiny must grant him an ideal wife fulfilling all his requirements on the basis of the biological right for love. His ever-present thoughts of suicide are temporarily driven away by replies to his new text on the dating website: "Hello, I am a single slim man with a university degree and 184 cm of height between 50 and biological death and I want to get married and have children of my own. Looking forward to your reply. Best regards, Jiří."
