Cuba is Music

In Cuba everything is expressed by music - the declaration of love and the rich harvest, the birth of a child and the loss of a donkey, the longing and the melancholy. The Cuban music is well-known all over the world but only a few people know what "son" and "bolero" mean, when these styles emerged and where they originated from. Thanks to the great Bulgarian singer Jordanka Hristova we are opening the secret room of Cuban music and the forgotten files where the history of "son" and "bolero" is kept.

Sometime Ago in Africa

Sometime Ago in Africa is an attempt to describe a certain idea, mad as it may have been at the time, which was however most earnestly pursued. The idea originated in inter-war Europe (inter alia in Poland, Austria and the successor states to the Austrian-Hungarian Empire - Czechoslovakia and Hungary) and is revived in one or the other form every now and then. The planned 1-hour documentary will tell a story of a Polish effort to establish a genuine colony in West Africa. The challenge took place in the 30-ies of the 20th century, it developed in a truly operetta style and, as we know today, ended in a complete failure.

Karosta: Life After the USSR

This film explores the abandoned military port of Karosta, in Western Latvia, which has seen some of the most influential and disturbing eras of modern times from Russian Tsarist origins, to Nazi and then Soviet occupation. When the Russian army left in 1994 after Latvian independence, Karosta became largely uninhabited and most structures fell to ruin. In the late 1990s, the area was troubled by high unemployment, street crime and drug problems. This documentary explores how the residents of Karosta have coped throughout the years without infrastructure and order, and examines how community organisation K@2 aims to stimulate positive change by means of art, culture, education, and cooperation to give residents hope of a better future.

Jan Hus - A Mass for Three Dead Men

Jan Hus - A Mass for Three Dead Men tries to recover the legacy of the medieval reformist priest Jan Hus who was burnt to death by inquisition for his criticism and calling for reformation of the Catholic Church in 1415. The story takes place in the late 20th Century and relates to history of territory recently known as the Eastern Block. Jan Hus introduces three individuals - Ryszard Siwiec, Oskar Brüsewitz, and Graham Bamford, who set themselves on fire to protest against the political regimes in which they lived, and against which they had struggled.

War on Drugs

The film shows how the war on drugs is being waged by examining the situation in Colombia and the United States. Under a large offensive named Plan Colombia, coca and poppy growing areas are sprayed on a huge scale to eradicate the crops. In many remote sections of Colombia, the peasants have no viable alternatives to cultivating the coca plant. The coca plant is the only sustenance product there. In the United States, drug prohibition is enforced by imposing harsh prison terms for all drug law offenders. The fates of Richard Paey and Sharanda Jones show the social, political and personal implications of these measures. The War on Drugs is an analysis of a war that started almost 40 years ago and shows no signs of subsiding.
