Founded in 2001, the INSTITUTE OF DOCUMENTARY FILM (IDF) is a non-profit training and networking centre based in Prague, Czech Republic, focused on the support of East European documentary films and their wider promotion. Our activities support filmmakers through all stages of completion – development, funding, production, post-production, and distribution. We aim at individual filmmakers (tailored consultations), groups of carefully selected professionals with projects or films (Ex Oriente Film, East European Forum, East Silver, Doc Launch, etc.), broader professional community (East Doc Platform), as well as the general public (portal www.DOKweb.net). We closely work with key int. festivals, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, markets, or training initiatives and serve as the GATEWAY TO EAST EUROPEAN DOCUMENTARY FILM.

Very First Cowboy

There are cowboys in the Czech Republic. They wear wide hats, jeans, western outfits and ride in the rodeo. But only a few of them have ever visited America. They have learned all they are good at from films and TV or from those, who have lived in USA for some time. We have chosen a group of cowboys and we took them to one of the working ranches in Arizona in the summer of 2009. What will a group of friends and at the same time competitors do while on a long journey in their votive land? Who will still be wearing a wide hat after their return from America?

Wolf's Island. A Year Long Trip

"Wolf's Island" is a rare opportunity to observe a wolf pack in its natural surroundings. Three parts of the film will be dedicated to three years of the life of orphan wolf pups. Alf, Alpina, Maska and Mouse become our guides in the wild, with their laws and their mysteries. Perhaps just these four wolves may make you change your mind about the most mysterious predator in our world.

Hunting Bears

The idea of the film is to follow several artists who are involved in graffiti art, all around the world (US, UK, France) to show their aims and hopes, their problems, obstacles they face when doing their art, as sometimes they might even end up in jail. Through their explanations of how the art works, we would like to form some sort of visual lexicon of the art that is very present but still very marginalized.

Jim Čert´s Herbarium

Unseen

There is as a small cinema in Belgrade for those who do not see.

Visaless

The phenomenon that the documentary film deals with is on one hand unification of Europe and on the other the implementation of the Schengen regime on borders. In other words, the Schengen borders regime closes borders to the rest of the non-European Union countries, with the help of bureaucratic borders such as visa applications. The film tends to show the frustrations of the past and the fears of the future regarding a safer and better guarded Europe.
