Everything Is Possible

A cottage with a small garden at the edge of the village. Windows decorated with geraniums. The two elderly dwellers, Teresa and Jan, couldn't be more different. She starts her mornings with a heart-pumping exercise routine, and keeps busy all day. He moons about the house as if he had all the time in the world. Here, he spends some time on his art piece, there, he whistles a few bars with the birds outdoors. Their love is gone, but divorce is out of question, so the couple stays under one roof living their separate lives. Hadn't Teresa revolted she would have lived like that till the day she died. Despite her poverty, failed marriage and depression, she decided to see the world as a hitchhiker. Since her first journey fourteen years ago she goes on the road every year.

Odessa

A grand, absurd drama: The crew of a confiscated cruise ship is forced to spend seven years in a foreign harbor. Left to their own designs by a bankrupt company and ignored by the Ukrainian authorities, sailors on the "Odessa" are forced to come to terms with their fate, in the Bay of Naples. Though of central importance, this drama hovers like a background motif above a main story, which alludes to it mysteriously, without a concrete mention: Two men explore the harbor area in Naples, pacing along desolate piazzas and half-empty buildings, crossing loading zones and nearly deserted landings, venturing into abandoned restricted areas. Their manner, resolute gestures, and sure steps provide their actions with a kind of significance, which contrasts oddly with the fate of the Odessa's crew. At first the two wanderers give rise to the expectation that their apparently diligent survey of the harbor grounds is somehow relevant to the ship's drama, though in the end it proves to be charmingly pointless. A poignantly beautiful farce about being lost in time and space. (Robert Buchschwenter)

Romanies go to Election

A documentary featuring a Gypsy leader Vlado Sendrei and his team in an attempt to win elections in “white” Slovakia. What are the odds that the Roma activist Vlado Sendrei and his election team succeeds in a society of “white majority”? Despite expert help from an American foundation, one experiences an unbelievably lively campaign, tragicomical moments, and a glimpse into Roma ghettoes on the verge of society. Vlado's wife Jana openly claims her husband's activities are harmful to his family and Roma values, increasing tensions between them. The Big Day - election day - turns the emotions upside down. The new film by Jaro Vojtek renders a world of deception, and it's only the Gypsy fortune-teller who tells the truth!

Family Meals

Do you remember when was the last time you talked to your parents? What did you talk about? Did you go a step beyond weather forecast and daily politics? Can a conversation about buried family secrets help you eat without cramps in your stomach? Can a failed birthday cake help you embrace the past? A birthday celebration brings together an ordinary four member family five years after their last gathering. They start questioning what made them turn away from each other. Through the ritual of family meals, the film unveils how important it is to feel accepted by our loved ones.

Gold Spinners

The Gold Spinners tells the story of the birth, glory and downfall of a peculiar, invisible and mighty business empire. It’s a story of the film studio Eesti Reklaamfilm – the only enterprise producing commercials in the Soviet Union. It might have been born in the head of one man, but during its heyday the studio provided employment for hundreds of people and its clips won over millions. And all this in the ‘socialist empire‘, under the conditions of planned economy and universal lack of everything. With no actual goods to advertise, marketing rules did not apply and even the word advertisement sounded almost as horrible as ‘the CIA‘, ‘the saxophone‘ or ‘Coca-Cola‘ to the thousands of concerned officials.

There are five other seasoned and long serving soldiers stationed here, each with their own personal story or secret that has caused them to retreat from the real world. Their training and breaking in of the new arrival is sometimes humorous, at times harsh. Gradually, they each reveal something of themselves in their daily interactions and private moments as they continue their absurd duty in this snow covered no man's land, hundreds of miles from the nearest human settlement.

Abendland

Western standard of living, civilization, and the urge to exclude others from it are the core of Geyrhalter's latest cinematic documentary essay. Entirely shot at night, Geyrhalter takes us on a very personal journey through the Western world and the structures that guarantee our "civilized" world. Sometimes darkness can help us to see things more clearly.

War Games and the Man Who Stopped Them | Dariusz Jablonski | Poland, Slovakia | 2009

"War Games" is a story about a man whom historians consider as the most important spy of the cold war era. The main character of Dariusz Jabloński’s documentary is Ryszard Kukliński (pseudonym: Jack Strong), a colonel in headquarters of the Polish Army (Ludowe Wojsko Polskie) in the ‘70s. Between 1972 and 1981 he handed over to the West over 40 thousand pages of the top secret Warsaw Pact documents. Some people claim that if it wasn’t for those documents, maybe all Europe would be licking their wounds after the worldwide nuclear cataclysm. Americans see him as a hero, Russians – as a traitor, Poles are divided...

Headmaster's Time Off

In the end of October 2009 the director of the Gymnasium Matyáš Lerch was removed because of "serious breach of legal enactments". He was supposed to mismanage the financial resources. But the students, teachers, parents and number of others did not believe that this removal was fair. The documentary offers a sincere look into that cause from the point of view of four main protagonists.
