Institute of Documentary Film’s Activities
Founded in 2001, the INSTITUTE OF DOCUMENTARY FILM (IDF) is a non-profit training and networking centre based in Prague, Czech Republic, focused on the support of East European documentary films and their wider promotion. Our activities support filmmakers through all stages of completion – development, funding, production, post-production, and distribution. We aim at individual filmmakers (tailored consultations), groups of carefully selected professionals with projects or films (Ex Oriente Film, East European Forum, East Silver, Doc Launch, etc.), broader professional community (East Doc Platform), as well as the general public (portal www.DOKweb.net). We closely work with key int. festivals, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, markets, or training initiatives and serve as the GATEWAY TO EAST EUROPEAN DOCUMENTARY FILM.

Physicians

What happens behind the closed doors of surgical wards, treatment rooms and other spaces where specialist medical consultations take place? The film follows the everyday work of doctors in a surgical ward: the hierarchy between them, the need to take important decisions, the struggle with economic problems. Although usually they use a vernacular incomprehensible to an average person, they also tell jokes or insider’s anecdotes. Their work, despite the knowledge and experience acquired, may still involve surprising moments.

Comeback

Recidivism is a serious problem. Things that people in the outside world consider normal and ordinary pose great problems for ex-convicts. No place to stay, disowned by their families, jobless and with a criminal record. They have no clothes to wear and no food to eat. The film is a social study of the world of prisoners. It follows the life of two recidivists while they are in prison and later, as they make their first steps outside the gates of the most closely watched Slovak jail accompanied by a journalist.

On the Road

The Life of My Father

Luboš Hrůza was the most influential stage designer in Scandinavia in the 1970s and 1980s, and was one of the leading factors in changing the conceptual way of using space on stage. He brought in a new dramaturgy and very much formed the development of theater in the 70s. He became the head of stage design at the Nationaltheatret in Oslo for 20 years. While still not speaking Norwegian, he was to become known to the Norwegian public as “Ibsen's Brother” or “the revival of Ibsen” through his famous interpretations of this author's plays. The film is braided with three storylines. The chronological journey undergone by the daughter who wants to go back in time and follow the path of her father and his artistic development. In order to understand the impact Luboš had in the theatre scene, we also have to understand the principles of stage design.

here... I mean there

Ani and Sanda are two girls from Maramuresh who grew up with their grandparents. Their parents are working in Spain, like so many other Romanians. When they left, their common project looked promising: with the money earned in Spain they shall build a house in which the whole family will be happy. After more than 10 years, things haven’t turned out as planned, and the big house is far from being finished.

The Jail Team

A film about one man's efforts to overturn the value system of people who, after a bottle of rakia, think that human life is worthless. The story takes place in the Kazichene prison. The characters in the film have been sentenced for attempted murder, theft and assault. Facing them is the psychologist Kalin Gaytandzhiev and two teachers. The aim: for at least one out of 100 people to rise from the gutter.

Solar Eclipse

In 2006, Milan and Tomas electrified a school campus and a hospital in a detached Zambian village. After four years, they return for the last time to find out about their system's failures, repair it and hand it over at last. The film follows them through chaotic days as well as pitch black nights and provides a fresh insight into the pitfalls of humanitarian development projects. Short circuits of all sorts, blending and dissolving of different worlds, rituals of gratitude and concepts of solutions. With no attempts to declare or evaluate anything, Solar Eclipse becomes a situation probe examining various forms of light and darkness. Will the two Czech linkboys succeed in lighting up the Zambian bushland?

Still(s) on the Road

Field of Magic

Life in the dump: A poem to an unknown tribe. Field of Magic is a docu-poem about people living for over two decades in Buda forest near the closed down Kariotiškės dump, 40 km from Vilnius, Lithuania. A result of four year's work, the film captures the perspective of the dump dwellers in telling the story of a dissolving community, its uniqueness, daily rhythm, peculiar way of life, every-day joys and sorrows.

Finalists

Why is it that people don't go to galleries, claiming they don't understand art dealing with everyday issues? Why do people believe that art requires craft only? What makes a social project, such as painting somebody's fence without permission, a piece of art? The observational documentary follows the five finalists of the 2010 Jindřich Chalupecký Award from the moment of their presentation in the Dox Centre for Contemporary Art, following them for the next five years. The final shortlist of the prestigious award included three artists and two art duos. Alice Nikitinová, a painter of almost abstract canvases , a street artist Jakub Matuška, a conceptual artist and theorist Václav Magid, a duo of draughtsmen David Böhm and Jiří Franta and a cross-media art duo Vasil Artamonov and Alexej Klyuykov. Not only do the authors vary in the means of expression, they have dofferent origins and mentality. The only thing they have in common is the fact that they studied at Czech art schools. In the form of interviews and scenes, the film captures their rises and falls, personal worries and joys. The film contrasts their diverse means of artistic expression with respect to their varied output, audiences, admirers and critics. In an unbiased and humorous way, the film confronts the controversial environment of the Czech art scene, including the distinctively dull audience, mistaken reactions of the media and the lack of possibilities for a professional art career.
