Institute of Documentary Film’s Activities
Founded in 2001, the INSTITUTE OF DOCUMENTARY FILM (IDF) is a non-profit training and networking centre based in Prague, Czech Republic, focused on the support of East European documentary films and their wider promotion. Our activities support filmmakers through all stages of completion – development, funding, production, post-production, and distribution. We aim at individual filmmakers (tailored consultations), groups of carefully selected professionals with projects or films (Ex Oriente Film, East European Forum, East Silver, Doc Launch, etc.), broader professional community (East Doc Platform), as well as the general public (portal www.DOKweb.net). We closely work with key int. festivals, broadcasters, distributors, sales agents, markets, or training initiatives and serve as the GATEWAY TO EAST EUROPEAN DOCUMENTARY FILM.

The Art of Documentary Editing

After the success of the pioneering Art of Documentary Filmmaking workshop held in Yangon, Myanmar in 2005, Anglo-Burmese filmmaker Lindsey Merrison and four experienced documentary editors from Europe and Australia returned in 2006 to mount The Art of Documentary Editing. The programme is co-organized by the Institute of Documentary Film.

The Art of Documentary Editing
Venue: Yangon, Myanmar
Dates: November 19 - December 21, 2006

During the workshop, the Yangon Film School organized a presentation of three not-for-profit organizations: Population Services International Myanmar (PSI), World Concern (WC), Association Francois Xavier Bagnoud (AFXB), helping the course participants to find out more about their activities. The presentation was followed by screenings of several films made by the participants that were well received by the audience. In the post-screening debate, all parties discussed the possibilities of future cooperation in YFS projects.

YFS director Lindsey Merrison began cooperation with the UNICEF as well as International Development Enterprise (IDE) and CARE. YFS activities introduced; forms of cooperation discussed.

In order to select suitable candidates for the next course, Lindsey Merrison contacted and interviewed several men and women to find out more about their work, language level, motivation, etc. The offer for professional training was made also to members of not-for-profit organizations who were also interviewed.

New YFS offices found in Yangon, used for business meetings, screenings and editing.

In August 2006, YFS director Lindsey Merrison contacted Daniele Pfennings to start cooperation with YFS as a fundraiser-consultant.

YFS applied for several grants, e.g. Decentralized Cooperation (EU programme), Norwegian Burma Committee, Free Voice (Netherlands), Goethe Institute (Indonesia), Konrad Adenauer Foundation (Singapore) or the Institute of Documentary Film (Czech Republic).

A DVD was made that includes short films by the participants of the previous YFS courses as well as a short film about the workshops that features interviews with the participants. The final product will be available in March 2006. Copies will be used for the following purposes:

  • to include the films in the Documentary competition (Heinrich Böll Foundation)
  • for fundraising; presentation of YFS activities for prospective donors
  • for non-profit organizations that are YFS clients (one of the films made during the course was intended for internal use of the non-profit organization PSI).
  • to present YFS activities to current donors
  • to promote YFS among young people in Myanmar who may be potential participants of YFS courses
  • to promote YFS programme at festivals as well as among interest groups in Myanmar

YFS received a film production permission that allows YFS participants to continue filmmaking in between courses.
